Weight gain worry

I'm 17+1 and I've put on 8lbs so far. In the first trimester unless I ate something every hour throughout the day I would puke. So even though my nausea was terrible and I didn't actually fancy any food I had to eat constantly. Was exactly the same as with my first pregnancy except I was 2 stone lighter at the start of that one and this time round I'm bordering on obese.

Anyway now the nausea has mostly passed but I'm STARVING all the time. I cannot go longer than 90 minutes without eating, and it has to be something proper - a rice cake or an apple or whatever doesn't cut it. I read that for obese women the recommended weight gain is 20lbs maximum and I'm already nearly halfway there.

I'm trying to eat healthily, fill up on protein etc, but I'm only 5ft2 and I don't have many calories to play with, as it were.

I tried to wait as long as possible to have breakfast this morning and held out til 9.30 - had a smoothie with banana, oats, flaxseeds, chia seeds and greek yoghurt. I'm already starving.

Anyone else???

I have noticed an increase in my appetite. I try to eat something every hour at work but I find a snack of fruit or a yogurt does work in between main meals. I’ve put on about a stone a half and I’m 26 weeks. I’m not too worried as I know I’m not stuffing my face with rubbish. I don’t think 8lbs is bad. Some of that is excess water and your uterus expanding so it’s not all weight that will need to be lost.

I never weigh myself so have no idea how much I've gained but I've definitely been eating a lot more and a lot less healthy than usual.

I'm trying not to sweat it, I'm doing what I need to get through pregnancy and will worry about it (or not!) when baby is here.

Be kind to your body, it's doing incredible things! xx

I’m not an expert by any stretch but I would say listen to your body and eat when you need to. Holding out for meals will mean you’ll end up eating more at each sitting, and potentially make your body hold on to more calories because it doesn’t know when it’ll next get food. I also don’t know but would worry it might impact blood sugar levels, which could also impact weight.

Honestly just eat when you need to, making the healthiest choices you can each time.

I read everywhere that most weight gain happens in 3rd trimester but I actually put on 12kg by the end of 2nd and only about 3 after that. I was worried but I was ravenous like you, trying to be healthy but just starving all the time. I was surprised how much weight came off after pregnancy - I had a big baby - even though I was still ravenous and smashing sweets and cakes for the first few months after birth. Then suddenly my appetite went back to kind of normal again and I stopped craving so much. I am back to my pre-pregnancy shape now after a year without dieting or anything. Remember that a lot of weight gain is the baby, placenta, waters etc - you might be having a big baby 😁 If you eat fairly healthily, include proteins etc, your body NEEDS it. Craving cake and fast food is different I think. I decided to stop watching my weight and worrying during pregnancy and just aim to eat 90% healthily and glad I did, my body needed it and now it’s shredded it all. x

I've put on soo much much weight! I cried about it yesterday as pre pregnancy I was very fit and active. Im 32 weeks now

In my first trimester I lost weight as was so sick all the time.
But now I'm starving 24/7 and eating seems to be the only thing that stops me being sick.

I've gained 3 stone and am shorter than you!

I just keep thinking it'll be worth it in the end :)

@CatOnBlanky it's so hard OP as I felt the same with my first and now on my second, it's even worse! I think I've put on about 8/9lbs and I'm only 15 weeks.

However, eat what your body craves! As long as you've got a good balanced diet with lots of variations of foods, you'll be giving your body the right nutrients! You don't want to look back on your pregnancy thinking about how much you stressed about it all, I know that's my regret from my first. And I write this as I'm tucking into a family sized bar of Dairy Milk! 🐷
