question for mears - kidney problem detected on scan

Mears I wondered if you were around. At my 2o week scan I was told there was a problem with my baby's kidney, the pelvis was dilated and there were lots of cysts filled with fluid. On the internet I have found info on PKD and at first scared myself silly .

It seems there are 3 types, the two that affect children being autosomal recessive and autosomal dominant. I wasn't given a name for my baby's condition but am assuming it can't be autosomal dominant as that is both kidneys and my babys problem seems to be just one sided. The info on recessive doesn't say whether its one side or both so was assuming that this is the condition my baby has but it sounds very serious, says something about kidney failure by the age of 6.

Consultant has just said I shouldn't have a home birth as we don't know how the baby will be during labour but hasn't said what the condition really is. Is there any other condition that can cause lots of cysts to be present without the baby having autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease and is hospital birth really advisable?

MBK, i posted to you on your old thread, the one after the 20-wk scan, to ask if this was Rental Dilatation. I'm assuming from your tone and from the fact that you haven't mentioned RD at all that it isn't, but the two things you mention the fluid and the dilation were also mentioned to me at mine.

apologies if you have already been told this ISN'T applicable in your case, but all sorts of consultants have told us RD is nothing to worry about, it's v common (i in 100 babies has it) and it's treated with antibiotics at birth with, in most cases, no more serious implications. (we went for an amnio, there are no chromosomal issues.)

has your consultant led you to believe it's more serious than this? or is it just the internet?

Yes, I think it is renal dilation. The pelvis of the kidney is dilated though, maybe in your case the whole kidney was dilated.

My eldest had enlarged renal pelvis, one side only. Pyeostasis I think is technical term. Nothing to do with cysts, though. He's absolutely fine, btw, but it is a soft marker for chromosone defects, so we had a detailed scan where the consultant pronounced it a single "anatomical asymetry", more extra scans to keep an eye on it, lots of worry but nothing wrong in the end.

Think the best thing to do is try and speak to a peadtatricn,if there is one in your local hospital.Has the hospital got a neonatal unit.

Sorry Milkybarkid - I haven't been around for a few days. Please do not worry too much about the findings on scan. It is not uncommon for there to be nothing wrong with the kidney after birth. Babies with dilated renal pelvii are given antibiotics from birth until the baby is reviewed at the clinic. As has been suggested I would ask to discuss it fully with the obstertician and/or paediatrician. I have seen many babies ahev absolutely nothing wrong with them once they are born despite problems being detected on scan. Sorrry I cannot help more.
