Help! August baby?!

Hi - second time mum but first was a September/October baby so newborn was very much bodysuit and sleepsuit day and night for the first couple of months.

Second baby due mid August and I'm just wondering what to plan?! Like is it worth getting sleepsuits at all? Will they be just in a bodysuit/romper/nappy in the day but will it differ at night.

I think it's the first couple of weeks/first month that I'm wondering about. And even for the hospital bag - will they still need bodysuit/sleepsuit combo in the hospital and to come home in?!

Any experience/tips greatfully received.

Am I overthinking this? Grin

You have ages, and surely you have all clothes from number 1? Totally depends what the weather is like.

We do have ages - I'm just planning/excited! Is a 5 year age gap and different sex too so I'm sure I'll want to treat myself/the baby. Thanks though?

In the hospital itself it’s usually absolutely boiling. Two of mine are summer babies, and were both in just a nappy in the hospital because they keep them so overheated. When home one of them still got quite chilly and was wrapped up. It was very hot when the other one was born and he ran warmer and was often in a romper or just a vest and nappy. But still a sleepsuit at night. And remember a) they’ve just come out of a human so even August weather feels colder than that to them and b) August in the UK doesn’t always = heatwave 😂 I’d think about yourself more. The babies weren’t getting overheated and obviously you keep an eye on them. But if you’re feeding and it’s really hot, or have them in a carrier, it gets very hot and sweaty for you very quickly. So make sure you have some nice loose and cool clothes that you can feed in (if bfing). And maybe a good fan to sit in the breeze of and/or use in your room and night.

Fab! Thank you! I did suspect I was particularly overthinking the hospital part - and had not thought about hot August nights and breastfeeding so will keep an eye out for cool night wear as well.

Thanks again xx

It's impossible to know - we had a huge heatwave at the start of September last year and it was like mid July. My newborn was either just in his nappy or in just a vest. That's not usual for September and I know others where it's been really cold by mid September.

allgoodthings84 · 05/03/2024 12:26

I had a baby 21st August last year and she wore a vest and sleepsuit in the hospital. It wasn’t as hot in there as I remembered with my first and she was May born but 8 years before. For the first week or two it was vests and sleepsuits and I worried I didn’t buy enough newborn sleepsuits and all the lovely summer clothes She was bought as gifts wouldn’t get worn but then September was really hot and she wore all the rompers etc

so I would say August/September are funny months and I would wait until right closer to the time before buying either. I definitely had too many rompers in newborn/first size. Go buying for 0-3 now or if you think you’re having a bigger baby 3-6 as can safely buy knowing long sleeved and sleepsuits. They all got worn but only once or twice max each and the 2 that were 0-3 never got worn as by that point it was too chilly again. It was a really awkward time of year to pick clothes for that will only fit that short time 😂

tealandteal · 05/03/2024 12:30

I have an end of July baby, in hospital it was short sleeve vest plus sleepsuit and hat, even though it was quite hot outside. Then once he was a few weeks and it got even hotter, little short sleeve rompers were cute for if we went out but mainly sleepsuits.

BurbageBrook · 05/03/2024 12:32

It can still be chilly sometimes in August, they will definitely need sleepsuits! My baby was a summer born and had sleepsuits most days - often footless - and short rompers only on the hotter days.

Nappy and vest with option to add sleep suit or light blanket. I have an August baby

mrssunshinexxx · 05/03/2024 12:49

We live in the uk so sadly you'll defo need sleepsuits x

Phillippeflop · 05/03/2024 12:50

I have a mid August ds and an October 1st dd so very similar to you op. I had normal baby grows for DS but also some more summery ones with short sleeves and legs. If it was boiling he was just in a vest. Reuse as many of you can from your older one too because they’re not in them long

Meadowfinch · 05/03/2024 12:52

My ds was August born, and a 50 percentile baby.

He spent the first few weeks in just a sleep suit and then added a vest as the nights got cooler. But he was a skinny little thing, not a chubby baby at all.

Just make sure you have all the options, and see what the weather does.

StasisMom · 05/03/2024 12:52

My DD is an August baby and it was bloody freezing and pouring down when she was born 🙄.

HappiestSleeping · 05/03/2024 13:00

@HayleyRobbo I can't advise on what baby should / should not wear, but can offer the perspective that I am an August baby, and I don't remember what my mum put me in, or being too hot or too cold. 😉

Best of luck, I'm sure baby will be fine.

Toddy21 · 05/03/2024 14:01

Just wanted to say hi, we are due in august too, this will be our 4th baby, we only have 2 of them at home unfortunately, their baby brother watches over us from the stars.
super stressed and worried this time around and not enjoying it at all in fear of what happened last time (2022)
how are you. Ladies feeling? And niggles and little kicks yet?

HayleyRobbo · 05/03/2024 14:04

@Toddy21 oh toddy I'm so sorry, and completely natural for you to be feeling scared/anxious?

We've been trying for around 3 years for this baby so still feels pretty magical, particularly as we eased out of 14 weeks (our second miscarriage was 14 weeks) and found out last week it's a girl which has completely blown my mind!

Still feeling shattered? But good! How are you doing??

My DD was born last August and we still had sleep suits but I'm a FTM so just prepared for any possibility! We did short sleeved bodysuits and sleep suits. That said, August last year was very meh and by the heatwave in September, DD was sleeping in nappies. I'd bring a few sleep suits to be on the safe side!

Also yup, agree with this! My DD was 19th August 🥰

Toddy21 · 05/03/2024 14:13

@HayleyRobbo It’s so worrying isn’t it, I was 23 weeks when my waters broke for no reason, so constantly on tender hooks at every thing. It must have felt such a relief to get past that date and be able to relax A bit and Start to enjoy your pregnancy, it’s such a precious and magical time. I’m currently 17 weeks 4 days so counting the weeks down.
I feel all good, all the sickness and fatigue has gone, in my head i could tackle the world but until I can relax and pass the 23rd week it’s rest as much as I can for now.
we have done some shopping though just to help with the thought of it’s all going to be ok, so far just a few sleep suits, vests and little lights summery outfits, we found out it’s another boy so our little whirlwind is happy he’ll have a brother to show the ropes to haha. X

GreenTurtle75 · 05/03/2024 19:42

I gave birth during the 2020 heatwave (among other events we like to forget that year...) and we did just short-sleeved bodysuits during the super-hot days at home, plus a sleepsuit at night. Most high-20s days we'd still put a sleepsuit or romper on him when out and about. Occasionally when it was unbearable, we did a nappy with a muslin over him, but generally most advice for those worst days is skin-on-skin to help them regulate their temperature – get in all the sweaty hugs.
