It's really really not a good time to lose weight.

Just concentrate on eating very healthily and not putting on too much and leave the rest till after the birth.

I was fat when I conceived DD and four stone heavier afterwards. But with breastfeeding I dropped all the excess weight frighteningly quickly after I had her.

Now I'm pregnant with number 2 and breastfeeding DD still and I can't put on weight at all though my DS at his 20 week scan was off their charts!

Honestly, it isn't worth it. It's not that the baby will suffer, but you will. You'll feel like shit and get anaemic and also your bones will degrade, so you'll end up fat and creaky. Not a great combination when you have a newborn.

I have been so sick and nauseous and was in hospital for several weeks with hyperemesis, that I have lost a stone and a half. All the docs were concerned about this level of weight loss, but fortunately (???) I could afford to loose it and I was on a saline/mineral drip and took various supplement tablets (when I coudl keep them down!) . I am now bang on the right weight for my height and build, although 15 weeks pg. Obviously I didn't set out to loose this weight, I don't think dieting at this point is to be recommended! But I did once read an article about that fat actress that was the receptionist in Casualty, who dieitng whilst pg, but under the close eye of an obstetrician.

Do not diet to loose weight, you can try and keep your weight steady and put on a minimal amount.

If you have a sensible high protein diet of grilled/boiled/steamed lean protein and plenty of vegetables + complex wholegrains and nuts and pulses + good fats in small amounts, you should not put on any weight during the first trimester, very little in the second and gain steadily in the third when baby needs it most.

Think about it this way: every bite counts to make your baby strong and healthy and keep you in optimal health to prepare your body for labour, motherhood and breastfeeding.

I put on 3 stone for my first. Now just 1 and 1/2 with still one month to go.

Your worst enemy is gorging on carbs because you restrict yourself at mealtimes and then overcompensate when your sugar levels drop.

If you snack, snack on protein/calcium rich foods. They keep your blood sugars steady and fill you up.

Then keep the sensible diet throughout breastfeeding (which is more of challenge because you'll always be hungry!!). You use up 500 calories a day, so should shed the pounds easily if you do not give in at that time.

Take care

PS: Take your vitamins and drink lots of skim milk

I was about a size 16 when I got pregnant. Due to nausea and sickness, I lost about 18lbs. Now 17 wks and starting to eat more but still not eating as much as before I got pregnant - am listening more to my body and eating when I get hungry. People comment on how well I'm looking as weight lost from face too!
So hopefully won't put on too much weight overall. No scales in the house though!

as far as I know, slimming world are recommended by the royal college of midwives, subject to a doctor's note and they tailor the diet for you.

I am a bigger mummy and I have lost weight during ths pregnancy (now 38 weeks) but under supervision from consultant.
My goal is to maintain my starting weight, which means, I am in fact losing weight but you can't measure it because the baby's weight gain cancels it out. (If that makes sense). I started off losing a stone initially through severe sickness, I have now put a few pounds back on, but I am still a little lower than my starting weight. When baby comes (hopefully soon \o/) I will weigh about a stone/stone half less than I did when I got my BFP. Hopefully a sensible diet, exercise and breastfeeding will see it decrease even more.
I haven't 'dieted' as such during this pregnancy - just ensured I have eaten a much healthier diet than normal. (I feel guilty eating rubbish when I know it will affect my baby.)

You can do Slimming World and possibly Weight Watchers.

I was over weight when I was pg and didn't put on much - 5 kilos I think over the whole pregnancy. I think part of it was I was really trying to eat healthily and I was eating lots of fruit and drinking lots of water. My cravings were cherries and strawberries and water.

So although I wouldn't recommend a strict diet regime you can eat very well and healthily so that you don't gain a lot and that really helps afterwards. I was my slimmest for a long time after giving birth and for about 6 months after. Have gained a lot since then though.

I havent actively tried to diet however before I became pregnant I ate rubbish, all junk food and lots of lovely alcohol.... as soon as I found out i was pregnant (at 4 weeks) I started to eat really well and had actually lost weight at booking in appointment with midwife. since then my weight has stayed the same (despite being 33 weeks now). I have also been diagnoised with gestational diabeties so have had to see dietician and various people re food and basically as long as you are not starving yourself but are eating a healthy diet and could stand to lose a little in the first place you will be fine. However you have to make sure you arent starving yourself or baby in any way!! best thing to do is cut out all unecessary sugars (cake, biscuits, chocolate) dont have too much in the way of carbs, when you have it have wholewheat pasta or basmati rice. basically fill up on fruit and veg - make that the major part of each meal. Make your own lunches and stuff if your still at work because the stuff you can buy often has lots of sugar added. Also eat 3 meals a day, dont skip!!
