I had a reassurance scan and NIPT test yesterday, prior to my twelve week scan next week.

I specifically asked about the nuchal translucency. The sonographer said everything looked great, and in the provided photos (such as the first photo), it does look fine. She also said she could see the nasal bone.

We got sent a video of the scan and at one point, baby moves up. I took a screenshot of the point at which (in my opinion), the amnion and the skin at the back of the neck are clearly separated. The nuchal translucency looks abnormal.

I can understand why the sonographer missed this, as for much of the scan the baby was quite still and so it could easily be assumed that (what I think is) the nuchal translucency was just part of the amniotic fluid.

But this is bad news, isn’t it? NIPT results due later this week so I’m just trying to steel myself.

jo899 · 13/03/2024 15:29

Huge congratulations NOW ENJOY your lovely little baby and pregnancy.

Trulyme · 13/03/2024 16:09

That’s great news OP!

Gently, I think if you can get help with your anxiety/paranoia before baby arrives then it will really help you.

For many women, having a baby brings out an anxiety that they didn’t even realise they had.
I never suffered any anxiety/paranoia until I gave birth.

GelatoPistacchio · 13/03/2024 18:13

Great news OP! I hope you have a lovely rest of your pregnancy 😊

AimeeLou84 · 13/03/2024 18:15

Congratulations on your baby, I’m glad that your mind has been put at rest. Please try and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. I had a similar experience with my first baby and I was grateful that everything turned out okay. Babies are a blessing but also a worry at times.

cannaecookrisotto · 13/03/2024 19:09

Aww congrats OP!
You can relax a bit now and enjoy being pregnant. It's complete shit being anxious, I had it at 20 weeks and thought I was leaking amniotic fluid. Turns out it was fecking piss when they tested but for those few hours I was beside myself!

My mum was really anxious when she was pregnant with my sister, she had a scan every fortnight (long history of miscarriages, molar pregnancy, 2 ectopics) and I remember her throwing up with worry on the morning of every scan. My sister is 21 this year!

jo899 · 13/03/2024 19:15

Hey again OP. I’m pretty sure I already said but I really regret not enjoying my pregnancy. So please make sure you do. It’s a special time. Eat well, rest, enjoy a slower pace of life, embrace your changing body, take loads of photos. 🥰

Omg 🤣🤣 so I’ve been leaking too so put a liner in to check and it was bright yellow leakage (my wee changes colour from my vitamins). I’m only 22 weeks and already peeing myself lol

BlessedKingfisher · 13/03/2024 21:54

Congrats OP 🎉
Funny story about scans and sonographers… When I had my 12 week scan, I was sure of my dates because I took ovulation tests to help get pregnant. Yet the sonographer was telling me I was 1 week ahead because my baby was so long. When I asked if it could be because my husband’s quite tall, she said nooo, babies are all the same length around this point so longer baby = more developed = further ahead. I would have brushed it off but they kept pestering me for induction when I hit 41 weeks (according to their dates - really I was barely 40 weeks)! I stuck to my guns and gave birth naturally, and the midwives said my son looked perfectly cooked, not overdue at all. AND he was really long, 56cm! He’s been 99% for height ever since.
So yeah… don’t let yourself be fobbed off if you have any concerns, it’s only fair to ask!
(also… can we have a guess at the sex? I’m basing it on skull theory 😁)

TupperCare · 13/03/2024 21:57

Great news, OP!

So many people here just don’t understand the anxiety and fear that something might be wrong and it baffles me. None of us want to feel anxious but it’s so natural!

GLC789 · 13/03/2024 22:10

Hi Op!

I understand your worries. I really do. But try not to get too worried.

I had early scans too and they looked a lot like yours (I didn't Google or anything as I'm no where near your level of intelligence and it would have been pointless to me lol). Baby is so small at this stage and it really is hard to make anything out at all properly!

But, I'm late 30s. First baby.

Currently 33 weeks pregnant and all is well! My baby girl is thriving inside me! Sending love and hopes that you will be saying the same as this soon enough.

Xxxx

EasterEgger · 13/03/2024 22:34

I found it's really not worth going to these extra "reassurance" scans as a lot of time they can't tell you anything official until you go to your NHS scan anyway.
Glad that it was nothing serious, best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy.

Wobblybobb · 13/03/2024 22:36

I've read the thread..
this area is often widened prior to 11+4 weeks. Fetal medicine units will not assess for a thickened NT unless it is measured within the screening timeframe, because they then reduce in thickness. I appreciate youve now had your scan within the dating / screening timeframe and it is now within normal NT range.
a previous poster said they were HCPC registered and so would be a sonographer. However many private companies employ radiographers from outside of the UK to register them with an HCPC number and then train them in the basics of ultrasound to provide private reassurance scans. The only guarantee of a post graduate CASE accredited Sonographer is within the NHS. Some private companies do only use Pg level trained Sonographers, but so many don't to save on wages. I really wish the government would hurry up and protect the title of Sonographer so people stop visiting these establishments that charge a fortune to be scanned by unqualified "Sonographers"
