Hi yes, had this (also known as pylectasis) with all 3 dds. Dd1's left kidney measured 15mm at 34 weeks, though dd3's never went beyond 10mm. All 3 were put on antibiotics at birth until about 5 months just in case of urine infections (all 3 resolved). It's really, really common, and our health authority has now stopped reporting it unless it's seen in conjunction with other factors (they now think it's a part of normal physiological kidney/urological development). Please don't worry, it happens loads and they'll just keep an eye on things in case - in the very rare event - they made need to remove a blockage at birth. Almost all cases are due to reflux though, and not an obstruction. Take care, and let us know how you get on .

Thanks Diege,

Were the antibiotics given immediately after birth?? I ask because I really wanted a home birth.

Hi horseshoe . Antibiotics prescribed at 5 week follow-up appointment, as is standard. Think it's something to do with the fact that if there's 'reflux' present in the collecting system this can make babies more prone to urine infections, and persistent infections if untreated can lead to kidney scarring which may cause problems later on. Putting them on low dose antibiotics prevents the infections and hence the problem until it resolves itself (at 5 months with my dds). So no problems whatsoever having your home birth .

My son also had this - same kidney and very similar measurement! He had antibiotics from birth but it was no problem to give orally in a tiny syringe. Then he had follow up ultrasound at 6 weeks. The size had reduced a little. Then they did another test where they put some dye into the bladder to check for blockage / reflux at about 11 weeks. There was neither blockage nor reflux so the antibiotics were stopped. I have spoken to a lot of people whose babies had this antenatally and in most cases it caused abosolutely no problems. Good luck with the birth.
