19 weeks twins - not feeling movement

Hi all.

I'm pretty sure this question has been asked numerous times... I'm currently pregnant with twins (18+6 days) and have unfortunately found myself in a desperate situation thinking that something is going wrong in the past week causing lots of stress and sleepless nights.

I had a private scan exactly two weeks ago and both babies looked fine! Around the same time I thought I started feeling movement but the past week this seems to be gone and I feel my belly is smaller and 'lighter' (if this is possible!). Even some of the other symptoms (i.e. constipation, tender breasts) have really eased. I'm very hesitant to call the midwife for some reason to not disturb but I really don't think I can wait for my anomaly scan in 11 days time..

Have you been in a similar situation? Did you call the midwife or the emergency gyn? Did they actually suggest to check on you? I really would like to be able to go in so they can check they are doing okay.. :(

Thank you for for any thoughts/experiences..

Go and get checked.

Don't worry about what anyone else thinks or whether the midwife will be annoyed.

I nearly lost my son because a midwife decided because I was crying I was overreacting. It wa only because I refused to be bullied by her and another midwife intervened that my son is currently having a lovely time abroad.

BirthdayRainbow · 02/03/2024 20:08

You can just turn up. They have to check you.

lunar1 · 02/03/2024 20:12

They will check the babies if you go in, there is no benefit to putting yourself through this worry.

gemloving · 02/03/2024 20:13

Just go to the early pregnancy unit. They'll never dismiss you. Kicks count xx

JessicaPeach · 02/03/2024 20:14

At 18w they might not see you, the Labour ward at my hospital won't until you are further along. Give them a call and ask, there might also be a section on your notes to tell you who to contact and when.

If it's any consolation at all, I felt my singleton move at about 14 weeks, my twins I had one posterior placenta and one anterior and I didn't reliably feel them move until past 20w, and even later on I couldn't tell which one was which movement wise really, and by the end it was just a jumble of limbs and hard to tell which was which.

Hope all is well, I found my twin pregnancy really hard compared to my very straightforward single one, twice the worry into the same amount of time! X

MaraScottie · 02/03/2024 20:14

Go get checked straight away OP.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 02/03/2024 20:17

You can call and ask but most hospitals won't see you at 18 weeks. It is still very early to feel kicks at this stage even with twins and they don't start counting kicks and movement normally until 26 weeks ish with multiple pregnancy.

BirthdayRainbow · 02/03/2024 20:32

I'd say you just need reassurance. Get them to listen to the heartbeat. If they refuse, ask for it in writing.

mamatoTails · 02/03/2024 20:53

I had 3 singletons and then twins, and I very rarely felt the twins move.
Due to their positions and positions of the placentas, it wasn't fun.
I went in once about 22 weeks because I was really struggling to feel movement.
They gave me a scan straightaway and they were both fine, being pretty lazy but ok.
They also said please call and go in if needed, anytime for reassurance, as always best to check.
It was a struggle throughout to feel them, considering there were 2 of them
I always assumed it would be a constant party in there, but they were always fairly quiet babies at scans, and I think that and the placentas at the front just stopped me feeling them much.
But please just call if you are ever worried, they won't mind at all.

CoconutGirI · 02/03/2024 21:16

@tinynoelly I'm carrying a singleton. I'm a nearly 21 weeks. I started having movement around 18 weeks and it comes and goes alot. There's some days I didn't feel anything and others I could only feel it once in a while if lying down in a xertain position still and I back a posterior placenta. Only this weekend did I start feeling more intense jolts

tinynoelly · 02/03/2024 21:48

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond. It makes me feel better that it is okay to worry and get in touch / go in probably which I'll do first thing in the morning.

It's my first pregnancy and it looks like I have anterior placentas which probably doesn't help.. but I think I need this reassurance at this stage otherwise I will go mad!

Have a lovely evening. :)

Did you get seen @tinynoelly?

Sophie3003 · 03/03/2024 14:02

I rang the midwife the other day because after feeling lots of and regular whooshing feelings it had stopped for a few days. I am 19 weeks. I was told that anything before 24 weeks is bonus movement and won't necessarily have a pattern and only to worry from 24 weeks at which point they would see you in hospital.

BirthdayRainbow · 03/03/2024 14:11

If you are worried go in.

If a midwife has an issue with someone needing reassurance then that's on them. Doesn't mean you're in the wrong. I was anxious as I nearly lost mine at 38 weeks due to a horrible midwife so obviously I was worried during my next pregnancy. Towards the end I was called in for weekly scans.

GeographyTeacher · 03/03/2024 15:06

@tinynoelly

Im 19w tomorrow with MCDA twins and I think I’ve had a few whoosh sensations, a bit like I’m on a rollercoaster but nothing much.

Are you being scanned regularly? I know MCDA/DCDA are a bit different but I’m scanned every fortnight and every week atm as they monitor me closely for TTTS. So even though I've not felt much I am seeing them regularly.

I had an experience last week where I called triage (my trust said because I have twins I could call them after 16w over EPU which usually goes to 20w) and they just said to take paracetamol and monitor. My consultant and twin midwife were really annoyed that the person that took the call didn’t invite me in as I expressed concern over TTTS symptoms.

What I’m trying to say is do not worry about being an inconvenience to anyone and push to be seen. Better to be ‘overreacting’ (which you’re not) than find out something terrible has happened (which I’m sure it hasn’t). I also don’t have many extreme symptoms other than tiredness and constipation so totally understand how you feel!

Let is know how you get on x

I presumed Dcda as op said private scan at 16w and nhs scan at 20. Dcda is scans every 4 weeks starting at 20w and no risk of ttts as separate placentas.

Hope you are ok op.

tinynoelly · 04/03/2024 09:27

Hi!

I did call straight in the morning and I was really relieved that the midwife was very empathetic and called me straight in! I didn't know it was possible to be seen locally on a weekend.. so thanks all for pushing me to not be shy.

She used the doppler to check on the heartbeats and thankfully she was able to find both. I feel really relieved now, and interestingly I think I feel movements again. :)

@GeographyTeacher
My babies are in separate sacks but unsure whether they are identical yet. I'm a bit extra worried so I do some inbetween scans..

Really sorry to hear about your experience.. it's better to persevere, you are right. hope everything goes smoothly with your pregnancy too. :)
