Hello

I'm currently pregnant with my second baby. I had my 28w midwife appt this morning & the midwife measured me for the first time.

Baby is on 75th centile, if he stays on this line baby is estimated to be 10lbs at 40weeks Shock

My DD was 8lbs 8oz at 41+ 2. I think I'm looking for reassurance or how accurate the chart is. I'm actually terrified at the thought of having a 10lb baby xx

The chart is accurate if you look at in on the basis that if you continue to grow on the 75th percentile at 40 weeks your baby will be 10lbs.

But it's by no means an guarantee that you will stay on the 75th percentile. Babies grow at different rates at different stages so may slow down a bit and come back to 50th, may track at 75th or increase to 100th.

Have you had a GTT?

This is based on midwife measuring your bump? Very innacurate. Many trusts aren't doing this anymore. Please don't worry. If bump size tracks bigger or smaller than expected they may refer for a growth scan. Scans more accurate but still not great, especially where predictions are large. They can be out by 20%. It's so so common to be told baby is big, and they turn out to be average.

As pp, our trust dont do bump measuring anymore as it can be very inaccurate. We all get a 36w scan as standard and they give idea of birth scan from the scan (although that too can be a bit inaccurate!) Are you due to have anymore scans?

@Chasingbaby2 @ProjectKettle @Toda11

Thank you all, I feel reassured and to be honest I'd much prefer a scan at 36w than measuring. I certainly don't feel bigger than my other pregnancy but it has scared the absolute life out of me!!

No scans planned, I have a GTT on Friday but that's because diabetes runs in my family, not because I'm high risk etc!

This is a measurement of your uterus, not your baby. It tells you nothing really about the size of your baby. It's the growth trajectory that is more important as the pregnancy progresses. Even then it can be wrong a lot of the time..baby's position, a different midwife or time of day can easily affect the measurement each time.
Generally they are wanting to see that your growth doesn't appear to be slow or excessive. If it does then they can refer you for a growth scan to get a rough estimate of your baby's weight.
