Prolonged standing

Hi mums I'm getting a bit worried as I've spent most of the day cooking and didn't realise towards the end that I'd spent a good 4-5 hours standing. Now my lower back is aching (but I do get sciatica too). I am only around 5 weeks. Desperately seeking any reassurances!

If your back is sore, sit somewhere comfortable or have a lie down for a bit - but I'm not really sure what reassurance you're looking for? Anybody can get back ache after standing for a long time, and lower back ache/discomfort is very normal in the first few weeks of pregnancy.

There are some tips for managing back pain in pregnancy on the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/related-conditions/common-symptoms/back-pain

Hi @blossoming137 im a teacher so spend lots of my day standing (I’m 15 weeks). I never even considered it might be an issue! I just sit if I get tired or sore legs but otherwise stay standing. I think you’ll be absolutely fine - think of those people in jobs where they’re on their feet all day (including midwives who themselves are pregnant!). Just take it easy and sit when you feel you need to. Otherwise staying mobile is important and so good for you

@CluelessInLondon thanks! Sorry I meant to say reassurance in terms of not harming the baby/increasing risk of any complications. As I read online it's not advised to stand for prolonged periods as it can be harmful..Obviously will take care now going forwards

@FirstTimeMum1608 aw thanks for sharing, that is reassuring and yes you're right it's good to keep active! Think I'm just overthinking it because it's triggered back pain when I don't normally get it- but that could be because of all the bodily changes

@blossoming137 Definitely not something to worry about too much, especially at this early stage! There's a lot of over-cautious (and unnecessarily panic-inducing) information online, obviously lots of people have to stand for a long time when they're pregnant - everyone can't be sitting down all the time! Just try not to overdo it and rest if it's bothering you, but otherwise do the things you would normally do.

I'd imagine that guidance is more to do with later pregnancy when you're carrying a large weight in your tummy.

@Anabella321 that makes sense! I just read that it can reduce blood flow to the uterus which can potentially be risky. I think if your used to prolonged standing for hours on end then it's ok as your body has adapted but maybe if it's not a daily thing then you have to take more care?? Who knows!

Make sure you’re reading correct evidence based research, there is no way standing for a few hours at 5 weeks does anything.

It’s not a problem. But the first trimester is pretty tough. I remember feeling achy after cleaning the kitchen for about 30 minutes. I could have cried. It’s more so your body getting used to the changes then it is about the baby being harmed. Definitely put your feet up and take it slow.
