Dark brown spotting 13 weeks *TMI PICS*

I've been having on and off bloody discharge for three weeks.
Yesterday I was in EPAU for a cervical check, the nurse used a speculum to have a look. No sign of infection but my cervix was inflamed. I had no spotting after this yesterday

Today we had our dating scan and all was well. This evening I've noticed increased spotting when I wipe. Previously it was just in my discharge but now seems to also be on the tissue. My vagina does feel slightly irritated.

I'm just concerned as I didn't have any spotting until more than 24 hours after the internal check.

I had that and bright red blood at 11 weeks. Went for private scan and baby was fine. She turns 5 this week.

Did you find out what caused it?

I had bleeding often throughout my second pregnancy, it started at 4 weeks and carried on with a pad full of red blood at 38 weeks, she is now a healthy and happy 17 month old. I had a mixture of red blood and brown blood and brown discharge much like your pictures. I had many extra scans and no reason was ever given for my bleeding but she was perfectly fine, a normal labour and no issues. I know the same can't be said for everyobe but try not to worry too much, there's nothing you can do except for contact your midwife for reassurance. If it helps, the midwives told me they aren't ever concerned by brown bleeding as it's old and could be from implantation/ irritation of the cervix previously. Wishing you all the best Flowers

Thank you for your comment. I keep having weird colour discharge which is what prompted them to check my cervix. Which was quite inflamed and red.

This is the first time I've seen brown blood. My midwife said the same last I spoke to her but a few people on Reddit told me their loses started with this so I'm incredible worried now.

@FirsttimerMA yeah definitely. They say to be careful with reduced movements as there may still be a heartbeat but baby is in distress and you don't know. Also you need to look up and watch videos to make sure you know what youre listening for, so you don't mistake your own heartbeat or sounds of the placenta/cord etc. however I don't know how people mix that up when babies heart rate is much higher than your own for example lol. But I calmed my anxiety soooo much until I could feel her everyday.

I didn't tell my partner until I'd already had it a few weeks as I knew he'd tell me not to aswell haha

Ttcmumma · 24/02/2024 13:24

Oh I also always done it before attending a scan as I would go into the scan shaking thinking there would be no heartbeat again. So having that quick check at home meant I could breathe in the waiting room!

Ahhh this is smart. I might invest in one and quietly figure it out and then tell him ahah. But I feel like I should see the outcome of this spotting first. I might need to get rescanned for reassurance and then invest in one.

I could maybe ask my midwife to show me?

Oh gosh. I was a nervous wreck before my scan yesterday!

@FirsttimerMA they might not show you as they tend to not recommend it to non professionals but I watched midwives on YouTube and read all about it online. It's pretty simple to be honest and if you do it, just remember initially you are early and you may not be able to pick up the heartbeat right away x

Ahh that's fair. I will bear that in mind. Do you use the cell when you use it?

@Ttcmumma sorry I meant gel*

Also do you have a recommendation on a good Doppler. I've seen one on Amazon but it's got mixed reviews?

TW - loss!!

I'm currently going through a loss. I had brown spotting for a few days but didn't think anything of it as it's totally normal. However, on the third day it turned red and started filling a pad. That's when I had a bad feeling. My symptoms also completely disappeared. I hope your outcome is a positive one ❤️

Was it constantly coming down for the days leading up to the blood?

@Bb542 sorry for your loss x

Bb542 · 24/02/2024 17:02

@FirsttimerMA it was just when I wiped for 2 days and then it started to fill a pad.

@Helplessandheartbroke thanks so much ❤️ it really is awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone x

That's heartbreaking. 😞 I'll ring EPAU again and see if they can see me.

Called and they're still saying I need to just watch to see if it gets heavier. They said it's more likely from the cervical exam but they can never say for certain. If it continues I'll push for a scan.

Did you have similar with your loss?

OP posts:
Helplessandheartbroke · 24/02/2024 18:04

@FirsttimerMA no. I thought I had wet myself, went to the toilet and there was just a pool of blood. I knew instantly.

With my now ds I had spotting which was bright red and ended up being group b strep x

I'm so sorry. I can only imagine how hard it was at 16 weeks. I was only 7 weeks but it still hurts so much. Thinking of you and sending lots of love ❤️

bathbooknap · 24/02/2024 19:03

I had bright red spotting twice during my successful pregnancy and was checked by the hospital as my placenta was low lying. My baby is a very healthy 4 month old now. They didn’t know what caused the spotting. Wishing you all the best of luck xxx

Helplessandheartbroke · 24/02/2024 20:38

@Bb542 thank you. I should have mentioned it was several years ago but yes it was painful. I've now got an almost 4 yo happy and healthy. I hope you get a positive result soon x
