Transverse baby experiences?

Getting really worried my baby isn’t going to turn! I’m 33 weeks and he’s still transverse. My midwife says there is still time but surely he’s running out of room to turn?

Is there anything I can do to encourage him to turn? And if anyone had a transverse baby were they ok? I’ve been reading horror stories about babies horizontal having development issues or similar which is making me worried.

Mine was transversed up until 38 weeks and then turned around

I did a lot of cleaning on my hands and knees. The kitchen had never been so clean 😂

There are some yoga positions which can help encourage baby

Not had experience with transverse but my baby was breech at around 33 weeks, I had a scan last week at 36 weeks and she had turned and is now head down. I didn't do anything in particular, I've just try to keep active. I had no idea she had turned but she did.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/02/2024 17:44

DS2 was transverse and tummy down so I was admitted to hospital at 36 weeks in case my waters broke. Had a c section at 38 weeks.

That was 25 years ago. He's absolutely fine, hit all his milestones, was a very good athlete at school (represented England U12s in one sport) and did well academically. Went to a RG uni and is now working in engineering.

If you've got concerns, talk to your midwife.

My 2nd DD was traverse, was told to go immediately to the hospital if labour started/waters broke. Fortunately she turned on her own (can't remember how many weeks sorry). She was 9.0lb born so not a small baby

ColleenDonaghy · 23/02/2024 19:10

My second was transverse all the way through, my bump looked like Mickey Mouse with the head on one side and the bum on the other. Grin

I had an ELCS obviously, but that was the plan anyway as I had an EMCS with my first that was a really positive experience. She was a big baby at 9lb 12oz so they did have to do some extra manoeuvring to get her out, and she needed a little help to cry and I lost a fair bit of blood. It was all very calm though and once we were out of theatre all was the same as my eldest, I breastfed with no issues and had a smooth recovery.

No developmental problems at all, she's 3 now.

My last baby was transverse at 36 weeks but had turned by the following week. I didn't do anything different to make him move just walking about doing the usual. I was told if he was still in the same position at 37 weeks they would admit me until my due date (39 wks planned c section) the reason was if i went into labour i was at risk of a cord prolapse, I spent the whole week terrified I'd go into early labour. At 33 weeks there's still plenty of time for baby to move so try not to worry too much.

HoorayForRain · 23/02/2024 19:31

I'm a transverse baby! No issues here, just that my mum had to have a c section.

CheeryBiscuit · 23/02/2024 19:32

Plenty of time for baby to turn. Have a look at the 'spinning babies' website in the mean time.

namefornow88 · 23/02/2024 19:43

My 3rd was transverse until 37 weeks. If he hadn't turned by then I'd have been admitted until 38 weeks which was the earliest they wanted to do c section. He had a hip scan at 1 month old but no issues whatsoever. Try not to worry, they often turn and if they don't it'll still be ok. I've had 3 c sections and had positive experiences with all of them. Much more preferable than pushing them out imo

CadyEastman · 23/02/2024 19:59

Both of mine were transverse at that stage. Both moved by themselves and I delivered them fine.

Ilovegoodison · 23/02/2024 20:02

My second DS was transverse and never budged from that position. Tbh I wanted a C section anyway after a horrendous birth experience with my first son . C section booked in for 39 weeks although I was told to go straight to the hospital if labour started/ waters broke before then due to risk
of cord prolapse.
No developmental issues at all- my son is a very bright, sporty 10 year old!

NoWordForFluffy · 23/02/2024 20:07

My son was a fully-wedged, going nowhere, transverse baby. I was admitted at 37 weeks and had an ELCS a week later.

I remember him turning sideways from head down. I was in Asda and it bloody hurt. And that's where he stayed! 🙄

PunkyBubba · 23/02/2024 20:20

DS2 was transverse at 37 weeks so I was admitted to hospital due to risk of cord prolapse. C-section booked for 39 weeks. I spent the 2 weeks in hospital bouncing on a birthing ball (thankfully they gave me a private room on day 3). Also yes to checking out spinning babies website! He turned the day before the c-section (38wks+6 days!) so I was induced and I had a natural birth. He was 9lb 6oz so size also doesn't necessarily mean they won't turn! He's 9 now, and no known or obvious SEN.

Try not to worry. DS1 was also transverse at 30-something weeks (I have a wonky womb apparently) and he definitely turned before 35 weeks (can't remember exact details)..

Angrymum22 · 23/02/2024 20:22

DS was transverse, couldn’t turn due to a large fibroid that developed where his head should have been. I was in hospital for the last 4 weeks with unstable blood pressure. Nearly all the midwives mistook the fibroid for his head despite me telling them his h ad was wedged under my left ribcage.
He was born at 36wks by c section.

lolomoon · 23/02/2024 20:23

My DS was a transverse baby. He stayed that way through basically my whole pregnancy. I was scheduled a CSection for 39weeks but my waters broke the day before so I ended up with an EMCS.
DS was absolutely perfect, and is now a thriving 3 year old. (Never knew about transverse babies having issues if I'm honest).
All the best with your birth!

My last pregnancy was transverse and they didn’t turn, was admitted to hospital after a scan at 37.5 ish weeks as was told too risky. Had a c section at 38 weeks, no issues and there was no obvious reason for baby being transverse (I was concerned there may have been a short cord)

lochmaree · 23/02/2024 20:29

both of mine were transverse for periods up until they were born. DC1 was found to be transverse in a growth scan at 36 weeks so they rescanned at 37 weeks exactly to see if I should be admitted and he'd gone head down so I wasn't. but I suspect now (after having my second) that he was unstable lie. I had an induction (reduced movements after 40 weeks), all the interventions then an emcs where his head had got impacted so the junior surgeon had to push him back up so they could get him out and as they did, he turned (literally as my belly was open for the section!) and came out breech. surgeon couldn't believe it and neither did the community midwives till they read my notes.

DC2 I thought was unstable lie as spent a lot of time transverse but not always, triage said they wouldn't do anything as a scan hadn't confirmed him as transverse/unstable lie so at 39 ish weeks my midwife sent me into hospital for a scan when she found him transverse at a routine appointment, 3 or so hours later they scanned and he was head down. so they said no action. but I requested their next available slot for a section. Both fine, happy kids, no developmental issues that we know of. Breastfed both.

Arabels · 23/02/2024 20:29

Oh, mine was transverse. God that is an uncomfortable way to carry a baby! You have no idea until they spin around how awkward it is. I had an ECG carried out by a very experienced consultant, which was done in 5 minutes flat. I went 2 weeks overdue and chose an induction plus epidural at that point, and had a vaginal delivery. That baby is now 5 and a smart, funny, very energetic handful x

Arabels · 23/02/2024 20:31

ECV I mean!

Lol. You've reminded me of the time the doctor put the scanning probe on my belt and immediately said "Oh THAT'S why you're uncomfortable".

tothelefttotheleft · 23/02/2024 21:01

My 9'8 baby turned late.

It didn't hurt but for some reason I did vomit.
