Is this nuchal translucency or amnion? Any sonographers out there..? 🙏

I went for a scan this week and I only wish I had noticed this at the time so I could have queried it.

On some of the images, it looks like there is a large nuchal translucency, however from another angle it looks like the gap is merely the space between the back of the baby and the amnion.

I have emailed to ask the sonographer which it is, but unfortunately she will not say, which makes me feel a little anxious.

We are doing NIPT but the appointment is a while away. This is a high risk pregnancy after a long journey and I need to be fully prepared for anything. If anyone reading this can recognise the difference between amnion or nuchal translucency I'd be grateful for your thoughts (even if it's not good news).

Thank you.

If nothing was said at the time I'm sure everything looked normal when bubba was scanned. Any concern would of been mentioned at the time to discuss further tests.

Also depends what age baby was as to whether it is even measured.

Thanks for your message. I’m not sure to be honest - I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that these private scan companies don’t comment on things like that, they just look for a heartbeat then look for general pelvic health (like is there any free fluid and things like that).

The NHS measures NT from week 11/45mm CRL and I am admittedly not at that stage yet. However, there is a lot of good research out there that shows accurate and predictive measurements can be made from 8 weeks.

I just wish I knew whether the line I am seeing is the amnion or the back of the baby’s neck. 😔

I'm pretty sure even private companies refer people if they have any concerns.

Scan pictures aren't always great and can look really bizarre, completely different to the whole picture the sonographer gets at the time x

I was referred at 10 weeks from a private scan as they weren’t sure (all was fine) so they should be referring if they are concerned regardless of gestation.

I will say there is a reason the NHS doesn’t measure before 11 weeks and it’s because of the inaccuracy which leads to more stress than good. You could always get in contact with early pregnancy unit on Monday if you are worried
