Was anybody much less sick in their second pregnancy, and everything turned out OK?

Hi all,
I have a 2 year old with whom I had a very tough pregnancy, with nausea and vomiting all the way through.

We recently started TTC again and unfortunately I had an early miscarriage. I am now pregnant again, which is great, but I'm naturally more anxious this time.

I'm about 7 weeks pregnant and having waves of nausea now and again, but mostly feeling fine. By this stage in my first pregnancy, I was already on prescription antiemetics as I could not eat or function without. Even while on the medication, I still vomited daily and was nauseous 24/7, for pretty much the whole 9 months.

I probably should be glad not to be so sick this time, but really I'm very worried. I am convinced something must be wrong and am afraid of a MMC.

Can anyone give me their experiences?

Great news, OP!

Just to add to all the anecdotes here: I was pretty sick during my first pregnancy and not sick at all in my second. To the point that I was actually kind of worried. My second was born healthy and perfect, and met milestones earlier than my first. The genotype of the baby really affects morning sickness, so your second baby probably just has a slightly different genetic makeup that triggers less sickness in you. Don’t worry!

Wow, that's really interesting! I had never heard that about the genotype of the baby being linked to levels of nausea... I googled it just now after reading your post and there's a really interesting study published only a couple of months ago: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06921-9
I am really interested in this kind of thing anyway, so now I will be going down a rabbit hole! Thanks for your post 😀

GDF15 linked to maternal risk of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy - Nature

Elevated circulating levels of GDF15 in pregnant women are associated with severe nausea and vomiting, and sensitivity to such symptoms during pregnancy is partly determined by prepregnancy levels of this hormone.
