I am 5/6 weeks pregnant and have been taking pregnacare max and everytime i take it i start getting waves of nausea and really bad bloating and gas. This is my first pregnancy and i am not sure if its normal or if its the pregnacare.

Any other recommendations for folic acid to take apart from pregnacare that won’t cause these symptoms?

I take only folic acid (you can buy them separately) plus Vit D. Both are tiny pills and don’t make me sick.

Hey OP. I’m now 19 weeks pregnant and been taking pregnacare max since around 4 weeks. I never physically been sick during my pregnancy but felt it during 1st trimester. A midwife told me that due to the coating on pregnacare it can cause nausea. I’m still taking it now and haven’t felt sick since I hit 2nd trimester. Maybe try them again when you hit 2nd trimester

Just take the small folic acid and vitamin d from boots. I could not stomach pregnacare either! Disgusting. Also super expensive.

I found the same with pregnacare. Last time I switched to seven seas which was cheaper and had ginger in, which may have helped. This time I am using proceive as I was advised to for other reasons, pricey but also no nausea.

Does it make a difference what time you take it? For me taking multivitamins in the morning on an empty stomach always makes me nauseous (not even pregnant!). Iron tablets (which pregnacare will contain) are best taken with a meal

I gave up with pregnacare on my second pregnancy because it made me feel awful. I took folic acid and left it at that, and looked to my diet for extra Vits. It just wasn't worth how ill it made me feel

Rosesanddaisies1 · 22/02/2024 12:39

Just get folic acid on its own from a supermarket/Boots, the pills are tiny. Same for Vit D. Better to get nutrients from your diet

Agree with PP. don’t take it first thing in the morning. Wait until later in the day when you have a full stomach. That did the trick for me.

The ingredients that make up the tablet for MOST tablets and vitamins are shocking and horrendous for our gut health. I didn’t know any of this in my first pregnancy and took pregnacare and felt the same, I then ended up with HG (not blaming the tablets for this)

it depends on your affordability but I would strongly recommend looking into taking some gut friendly vitamins. I use the wild nutrition ones, pregnancy and new mother support, I get them from H&B but you can order online. Think they’ve got a deal on at the moment for half price online otherwise they’re almost £40 at full price.

also, it’s not folic acid as such that we should be taking. We should be taking pure folate (folic acid in its natural form) also known as B9!

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/02/2024 14:46

Are you taking it on an empty stomach? Does it contain iron (can’t remember)? Pills with iron always make me sick without food.

whatamess100 · 22/02/2024 14:51

Argh they made me feel awful, i came off them and the nausea and bloating went. I went in fo seven sea folic acid
