Hi all,

I went for a scan today ( im 33w and 4 days) to sight my placenta as it was previously low lying. The sonograpgher said the stomach measurement was over the normal percentile, i believe it was somewhere in the 90s. She sent me to talk to a midwife who said everything else such as measurements of baby, fluid etc. Were fine but as stomach was so big they need to call a doctor.

They came back as no awnser from dr so sent me home for time being. so anxiously waiting til tomorow for a follow up hopefully.
Baby is weighing approx 5lbs ish, my fundal height is actually on the small side at 31cm and i havent put on a lot if any weight during pregnancy.

Anyone else had anythihg like this? Worried and confused !

Hi. It didn't cause any concerns on the scans but my sons tummy when he was born was massive! Had two consultants and a registrar check him over , all with no further concerns and they all basically said he would grow into his belly. Forward to the midwife appointment at about a week old, she was also concerned and sent us to A and E. More checks on him and the same result no problems and he would grow into his tummy.
He's now 21 months his tummy is still big but he really is growing into it, I'm thinking when he's about 4 it should look proportional.
May be a different thing for you but I'd say if everything else looks fine and functional that it's harmless?

My first had this on one of the scans, can't remember which week now but he was perfectly in proportion at birth

Icantbedoingwithit · 21/02/2024 21:16

I had this on one of mine. I am very short and slim but my belly was enormous. Think Mr Greedy on steroids. He was born and weighed 6 pound 2. Don’t worry!

They said the same on all of my scans with dd. Everything else measured up normal, but her stomach was huge. She was born with a big stomach, even though she was only 6lb 5oz. She's 5yo now, perfectly in proportion, and even on the petite size. You'd never know that she was born with such a disproportionate pot belly.

My DS was opposite and had slightly smaller stomach. They were freaking out and reffered me to consultant. I said no thanks. They need your consent. I carried on with growth scans and DS was still growing.
No issues went full term and had a healthy normal vaginal delievery. He was 6lbs so petite but normal size. He is fine and dandy at 28months and now measures in the 75th centile 13.4kg and 92cm.
Babies bodies vary just like adults. He has my DH body. Small torso looooooong lanky legs.

I had same at 30 week scan everything else normal but greater than 95th centile belly. Sonographer said it could be I had gestational diabetes but they thought it was more possible I was just having a big baby. My midwife thought it was neither as I was measuring exact. My midwife was right I didn't have diabetes and my baby was born 40 weeks at 7lb 5 well proportioned no large tummy in sight. Try not to worry

When you see the midwife double check the measurements is based on 33wks. I had a n issue with DS1 as they did a 38 week ultry but used the 20 wks as the base line so his kidneys were considered enlarged. He was fine but it made for a stressful few weeks

I have the same thing but for me it’s linked to GD.

Just posting to say I am worried too about baby’s stomach measuring large but this post is reassuring. What’s even more reassuring was the sonographer telling me that although baby’s stomach is in the higher percentile, it’s still within “the norm” and I have extra scans to check for growth.

Big tummy would be common with gestational diabetes so they should refer you for the glucose test. It doesn't mean for sure you'll have it, it could be just one of those things. Best thing to do is check and see just to cover all all your bases.

Luckydog7 · 24/02/2024 20:15

Yeah, my dd had a big tummy measurement (and head) both above 92nd percentile and they had concerns about my having diabetes. I had to have that glucose blood test twice in three weeks because of their concerns but she and I were fine, just a bean shaped baby. She still has a tummy now at four but its reducing as she gets older and her muscles get stronger.
