after having a blood test like nearly 2 weeks ago being told my levels were 109 and slightly anaemic I was just told to get iron tablets from the pharmacy I did I got 14mg ones from boots

a week later I had a midwife app anyway and mentioned I was taking them she said theyre not strong enough

ive now been prescribed and have in front of me 28 ferrous sulfate 200mg tablets but one to be taken twice a day???
thats what it says on the prescription sticker put on the pack but the actual box itself says one a day do not exceed

Jesus that seems a lot of iron to be taking for someone slightly anaemic???
I dont trust my doctor exactly as the midwife just emailed the doctor who said take boots pharmacy ones so now im paranoid this has been done all wrong
there's not even a leaflet in here with the pills
my mother collected them and asked if they were nut free swell as when I asked the doctor on the phone she said ask the Pharmacy she doesn't know
I dont know why but im scared to take them

I take iron tablets- exact same ones and take one a day. In the past I took 2 (previous pregnancy) by my levels were very low.
I would take one today and then contact your midwife tomorrow and ask for her advice.

im scared to even take one now as I feel like im not 100% its even right I feel like they've messed up as on the email to my doctor the midwife wrote feso4 which when googling says its FERROUS SULFATE which is what It says on the prescription sticker but the actual pill box is called ferrous SULPHATE so feel like its all wrong
why would I need such a high dose.. so confused

Just take one. I was advised 3 but I took 2 instead, but I was very anaemic. Don’t worry. 1 is fine. The 14mg stuff is for top up but if you are anaemic it means you are depleted

dementedpixie · 20/02/2024 21:47

Sulfate is the same as sulphate; just a different spelling

redddssak · 20/02/2024 21:48

okay I didnt realise they mean the same haha should've guessed, so would it be safe to just take one tonight then ask tomorrow if I need 2 just worried incase shes messed it all up

From nhs website:

Dose to treat anaemia
The usual dose for adults is:

tablets – one 200mg tablet usually once a day, but it may be 2 to 3 times a day. If you get side effects your doctor may advise you to take it on alternate days

merryandbrightdelight · 20/02/2024 21:50

I had those during my first pregnancy- one tonight then speak with your midwife or GP tomorrow

dementedpixie · 20/02/2024 21:52

From the nhs website it doesn't seem unlikely that 2 a day have been prescribed. If it was unusual I would have expected the pharmacist to have flagged it up

redddssak · 20/02/2024 21:55

might be difficult to speak to a doctor and midwife as well theyre usually a week wait so ill take one for now I guess until I can speak to someone appreciate the replies just worried as they had different names but seems theyre the same thing
I also dont really know who to trust the doctor or midwife as the doctor didnt even seem to care enough in the first place to prescribe the right thing just said get some from a pharmacy and she knew I was pregnant

and the midwife I have it seems she cant prescribe things so might be pointless asking her

it also says on the pack read additional information given with this medicine before but they didnt even leave the usual leaflet inside..

Sulfate is the American English spelling whereas Sulphate is more commonly used in the UK

This should have a link to the leaflet.

It says

Treatment of Iron-deficiency Anaemia: One tablet two to three times daily

Take Ferrous sulfate tablets by mouth

Ferrous sulfate tablets should not be taken with tea, milk or eggs

Treatment should not last more than three months after anaemia is controlled.

Ferrous Sulfate Tablets 200mg - Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) - (emc)

Ferrous Sulfate Tablets 200mg - Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) by Ranbaxy (UK) Limited a Sun Pharmaceutical Company

Yeap I had the same ones and not anemic. Only becuae.my ferrarin was normal but lower on the scale. 200mg x2 a day with a meal and with some.Vit C.

Did jack all as postpartum I lost a lot of blood. Thanks to the aspirin they put me on and was anemic after. It took 16 months to get back to normal levels.

Devann · 21/02/2024 06:13

my iron levels came out low (similar levels to you 104ish) in recent blood tests. I was prescribed ferrous sulphate and advised to take just one a day, if that helps.

Ceebeebee87 · 21/02/2024 08:10

Hello op.
My levels were at 97 and was prescribed one tablet to be taken every other day. But a couple of midwives told me to take one a day as I am near the end of my pregnancy and they want to get the levels up quickly. They said taking more than one a day would cause a lot of sickness. So like many people have said here I think one a day should be plenty. Hope you’re feeling better soon. It is exhausting! ❤️

dementedpixie · 21/02/2024 08:28

She has been prescribed 2 per day and that is in line with the instruction leaflet. I think she should take what has been prescribed tbh

1 tablet is for prevention and 2-3 tablets is for treatment of anaemia

redddssak · 21/02/2024 08:29

ive asked my midwife to give me a call today just to ask for sure/ ease my mind before taking any just waiting for a call

Dinosaurus86 · 21/02/2024 15:09

I was prescribed 2 a day but asked if it was ok to take 1, and they agreed. For me, my stomach struggles to cope with 2, but I don’t have problems with just 1.

redddssak · 21/02/2024 17:13

I rang my gp at 8am to ask to speak to midwife she said shell ask her and get back to me.. never did I rang back at 12 to seee what was going on she didnt even bother,
im going to just take the 2 a day although I took one at 12 and felt very sick not sure if that's from the tablet

I see my midwife end of the month ill ask then, s
but really sick of my gp they dont care the women on the reception was so rude and laughing at me... when she was like what concerns you... so bloody rude
