I'm 12 weeks pregnant (my first). My doctor put me on folic acid and B12 at 6 weeks. I have not been given pre-natal vitamins (I'm not living in England, I'm in Spain and I think vitamins are not the norm here.) How long should I take folic acid, I've heard only for the first 3 months of pregnancy? Anyone not been prescribed vitamins?

I've also developed lower back pain and my right leg tingles when I lie down or sit down. Does that sound like sciatica?

Thanks

The only vitamin that is recommended over here is Folic Acid (which is Vitamin B12). It is recommended you take it until 12wks.

We don't even get it prescribed - it is recommened.
I have had iron prescribed in the past foe anemia (but only in 1 of my 2 pgs - the other I had a v high blood count w/o it).

You can buy vitamin supplemets for pregnancy - but I didn't bother. If you do make sure that they are designed for pregnancy as too much of some vitamins can be toxic I think.

Thanks that makes me feel more comfortable. I don't really want to take vitamins, but every time I read about pregnancy I hear take vitamins take vitamins(maybe more of a US obsession). I'm trying to eat well and I feel great (except for the numbness in my leg!) So I suppose I should stop worrying.

I take antenatal vitamins, but that's because I get morning sickness, so my diet is very much restricted. Otherwise, I would take folic acid and the occasional multi-vitamin to top up (you need to watch the vitamin A on regular multis though).
