Spa day in pregnancy?

DP got me a voucher for a spa day for my birthday in October. Two weeks later I found out I was pregnant!

I emailed the spa asking if I could change to their ‘mum to be’ package but they informed me that the spa day booked is suitable for women who are over 12 weeks pregnant.

I don’t want to put baby at risk so just wanted to ask if it really is safe to go on a spa day when you’re pregnant? Is it safe to use the outdoor jacuzzi? I would avoid the sauna as I don’t like feeling too hot anyway.

Also, if I do go would I be safer selecting the facial in case the person isn’t trained in pregnancy massage?

thanks

It’s fine? I’m not sure which bit worries you. Just do whatever you feel comfortable doing, have a swim, massage, cup of tea

I went on spa days when pregnant, but I wouldn’t go to one which was just a pool, sauna and jacuzzi as you shouldn’t use the sauna and jacuzzi. The facial will be fine if you’re over 12 weeks, but tell the therapist you’re pregnant as not all products are safe when pregnant. I wouldn’t have the deep tissue massage if it’s not a specific pregnancy massage done by a therapist whose had training for it.

On the face of it looks ok, but don't really rate the way they dismissed you being in early pregnancy.

The massage should be a pregnancy massage as there are certain areas they shouldn't touch on pregnant body, so ask if the massage therapist is trained in pregnant body also.

Can't do sauna or jacuzzi as a precaution to overheating in 1st trimester. So effectively could do the normal pool and a facial.

There aren't many face products in issue during pregnancy, just a lot of scaremongering into 'natural' products.

Have a google of each of the things offered and the effect in pregnancy, and research to see what you are comfortable with. Otherwise just postpone until you are further along or after the pregnancy.

If you have to just pay the difference for the mum to be package then probably worth it for the peace of mind.

Thank you @StartedWithACrisp. I’m 18 weeks tomorrow and probably wouldn’t be planning on taking the spa day until around April time so will be further along. Will do a bit more research re using the jacuzzi after 20+ weeks

I had massages when I was pregnant. You're not supposed to have some aromatherapy so just ask for plain oil I think. Also if you're big enough to be uncomfortable on your front you can have a massage on your side or in a special chair but that'll hardly be an issue in your first trimester.
Pretty sure my midwife said the thing about hot baths/jacuzzi is that you faint more easily because of the extra blood, so if you feel uncomfortable at all, you should definitely move to somewhere more comfortable.

Yeah I'd be really unimpressed by that, if they offer a mum to be package I don't see why they wouldn't change it?!

I'm going for a pregnancy spa day tomorrow, happy to report back how it differs from a normal one!

I’ll be going for a spa day when I’m 12+2, literally can’t wait!

This reminds me of a few years ago when a group of us went away and there was a hot tub. We had two pregnant ladies with us. When they didn’t go in the hot tub, someone asked why, and one said, “I’m pretty sure it’s because it can cook the baby.” The other nodded along and said, “Yeah I think it’s something like that.”

It has absolutely NOTHING to do with cooking the baby 😂. It’s all about blood pressure.

The best bit? The two pregnant ladies were a doctor and a nurse 😂

Hot tub use in early pregnancy can lead to birth defects, @Lillers , so perhaps that's what they meant by "cook the baby"? It was an awful term to use though!

(Not posting this to worry anyone who has used a hot tub - the risk will still be small)

Maternal use of hot tub and major structural birth defects - PubMed

These results suggest that women who use hot tubs more than once during early pregnancy and for long periods of time have an increased risk of certain birth defect phenotypes, particularly anencephaly and gastroschisis. Because of multiple statistical...

@cunningplan101 No, they definitely meant cook like a piece of meat. They laughed about it a lot afterwards because they realised how ridiculous it was.
