Booked holiday abroad for 6 weeks after birth - am I mad?

I'm having a c section, logic was I'd be able to swim. Get some autumn sun in October.

We're going to DH's place of birth in Italy, so it won't be too hot or a long flight. I'd like his family and friends to meet the baby.

But now I'm wondering- can the baby sleep in a hotel cot which probably has an old mattress? Or should we bring our own travel cot? And our own car seat if we decide not to rent a car?

This is our first, we don't have a clue. I know I have a lot of time to plan, I'm just wondering what we should consider.

It's a cancellable flight in case we're struggling too much to travel or baby/I am not doing so well after birth.

3mo is better in terms of baby not needing as much but I would say 6mo is better in that the baby will be more robust to germs, have more vaccinations and will be able to enjoy the pool, etc.

Plus, weaning will have only just started so, if BLW, you will be able to try lots of lovely foods.

I'd say - if you have to book ahead - that there's more confidence in being able to enjoy a holiday 6 months post partum than three. At 6 months, your baby is unlikely to be crawling or cruising, which is much easier for travelling!

DS ( who went to Spain at 2 months) was both crawling and weaning at 6 months. He also hated being confined (in a car seat) as he could confidently sit up by himself but was obviously too young to forward face. I would say 3 months not 6. Actually I would avoid anything between 6 and about 15 months if at all possible.

Oh yes. I'd forgotten about weaning.
Go at 3 months!

4 or 5 months is perfect IMO.

If anyone has strong opinions on whether 3 or 6 months is best, do say!

I went away at 6 months, but this was 25 years ago and it meant I could give dc 6m old cows milk and not have to sterilise bottles any further, a good clean in the washing up bowl instead.

cows milk is now not suitable to give to dc of 6m and now babies need to have stuff sterilised until 12 months if they are British, so with that change 3 months would be as easy or difficult as 6 months in my mind

6 weeks is so soon when you’re in the thick of newborn especially if you’re a first time mum too. I had a vaginal delivery & stitches with first and defo 6 weeks would have been too soon. C section I would be concerned about the wound / healing / chances of infection. It’s major surgery.

We applied for both birth certificate and passport asap and took our baby to France as soon as his passport arrived. Just checked photos and he was 2 months old

Took my son on our first family holiday abroad at 4.5 months. We wanted to get in a last 'relaxing' holiday before he was running/ crawling around and it was perfect, he loved the beach & pool! Also if you plan to start weaning at 6 months I'd go before that.
