Cyclogest 400mg - progesterone symptoms

Hi all, this is my first time posting here. I have read quite a few other threads, but guess I just wanted more direct answers.

After years of TTC and being told it couldn’t/wouldn’t happen, I finally fell pregnant last year but unfortunately we lost our baby at only 8 weeks. By some absolute miracle, we have fallen pregnant naturally again (ttc for 6+ years, no contraception for 11+ years). We’ve had an early scan already and EPU have prescribed Cyclogest 400mg twice per day.

I would take them the whole pregnancy if needed, but the side effects (at least I think they are the side effects) are really taking a toll on me. Has anyone else experienced awful symptoms when taking Cyclogest during pregnancy? Or could it possibly just be usual first trimester symptoms?

I feel like I’ve been hit by a bus 10x over. Physical sickness isn’t too bad, but nausea is unbearable, I have no energy whatsoever, I feel absolutely floored. The only way I can describe how I feel is those first few days when you get the flu, but more intense.

like I said, I would take them as long as needed if it helps us have our baby in our arms at the end of it, but I’m really struggling.

thanks in advance for any replies x

I had these for my rainbow baby in 2018 and it was my worst pregnancy in terms of sickness. However I stopped mine at 14 weeks (consultant advice) and the symptoms didn't ease off until she was delivered at 37+3.
congratulations and I wish you a beautiful rainbow xx

I was on them from ovulation to 16 weeks. Felt rough as a dog initially but lots better after first tri and better again after stopping the cyclogest. Imo cyclogest probably amplified some symptoms - I had awful bloating from taking them which was before I was even pregnant really. Rest of the symptoms subsided when I expected them to (second pg didn't have cyclogest with first) so I'd say was not the main factor. Hope you feel better soon and congratulations.

I don’t think the progesterone is responsible for the nausea, but it is probably partially responsible for the tiredness. Congratulations!!

Rainbowpeanut02 · 14/02/2024 00:38

Hi, congratulations on your pregnancy. I started taking progesterone from week 6 and am currently 12+2. For me week 6-8 were the worst, really just weren’t good so I have an idea of how your doing. It does get better, I still have the nausea but nowhere near as severe as how it was then.

It will be worth it, you’ll soon see the light at the end of the tunnel xx

I had 3 mc last year so am on these now, taking 3 a day. I'm currently 6+4 but like you have had side effects from them. My boobs were unbelievably sore initially, which has thankfully eased off. The tiredness kicked in at 5 weeks and totally floored me. Interestingly like you I'm feeling nausea, but it's that weird sensation of not knowing whether I'm hungry or feel sick. I'm eating little and often to try and help but it's not really helping. Been like it all this week so far. Nausea doesn't seem to be listed as a side effect but interesting you're suffering too.

Hi! I’ve been on cyclogest 400mg pessaries twice a day since 4 weeks. I’m 14 weeks now and took my last one this morning 😮 honestly - I had bad tiredness and nausea which was worst between probably 6-9 weeks, it eased off a bit then and then has been much better since 12 weeks. This makes me think that the nausea/tiredness weren’t actually due to the cyclogest but were normal pregnancy symptoms - it’s so difficult to disentangle - pregnancy itself can leave you feeling absolutely rotten! I did get bad constipation though which I didn’t have in my previous pregnancy - again, hard to tell whether this was cyclogest or pregnancy or a mixture but my gut feel is that it was worsened by the cyclogest.

It sounds like first trimester, I had cyclogest from week 20 in my first pregnancy and from week 12 in my second pregnancy, the sickness stopped at week fourteen, I felt absolutely horrendous and it wasn't anything to do with the cylclogest, hope all goes well with your rainbow baby x

Thank you all so much for the messages.

100% it is so hard to figure out what is normal pregnancy symptoms and what could be caused by the progesterone, but the morning after putting this post up I woke up absolutely floored with a cold, so that explains why I felt even more rotten than I already did.

8 weeks today, so hopefully 4 more weeks of really bad symptoms and then only another 4 until I’m off the Cyclogest and I start to feel a little more normal, whatever that feels like.

Appreciate all of your kind wishes xx

Are any of you using these rectally? I've woken up to some spotting when I wipe so gone into panic mode. Still feel sick and a test is still a very dark line so praying its the pessaries that have irritated my cervix. Thought I'd try the rest of todays rectally. Got a scan on Monday.

Chasingbaby2 · 17/02/2024 11:25

Yep can be used either way, and I was warned about spotting when used vaginally. Tried the other way but found they gave me an upset stomach. Less messy though. Worth trying and seeing what you prefer.

Awaywiththeferries123 · 17/02/2024 11:34

I was on the same dose until 28 weeks. I had no symptoms and I think what you’re describing is most likely down to the pregnancy. They should ease off at about 10 weeks when your placenta takes over.

Rainbowpeanut02 · 17/02/2024 14:11

I’ve only used these vaginally, but one time I used them I was bleeding just when inserting it in. My OB told me it’s possibly because there is an increased amount of blood flow and the blood vessels are very small so it’s very easy to cut yourself without realising. Didn’t half scare me though!

How long can we use the progesterone in pregnancy? When is the cut off period?

RoseH36 · 17/02/2024 14:40

@Chasingbaby2 thank you, tried the other way and it stung a bit but will persevere for a bit as if it was that irritating my cervix it will let it settle down.

@Rainbowpeanut02 I was told until 12 weeks when the placenta takes over.

There is no cut off. My consultant wanted me to stay on until 36 weeks because he said the literal function is to support pregnancy. However I didn’t even have any issues with progesterone and it was part of a kitchen sink strategy to prevent another miscarriage so I convinced him to let me come off at 28 weeks as I was sick of shoving them up my hole twice a day.

I’ve been instructed until I’m 16 weeks x
