I'm 5 + 4 today and over the past two days my nausea has increased massively. I've been bed bound for 3 days now the Nausea is so debilitating. I've been sick 4 times today I can't seem to keep anything down it just comes straight back up again even water etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions or remedies?

So yes, see below, but by the sounds of it you need to see a doctor.

  • apple juice with fresh ginger blender in
  • ginger shots (can buy or make own)
  • sparkling water with Belvoir ginger cordial
  • partner made me a big bowl of fruit salad which I graze on
  • salty crackers
  • eat! I know it's so so hard but hunger makes it worse so just constantly remain fed.

I agree you need to contact your GP for medication if it’s that bad. Hope you find something that eases it a bit.

CheeryBiscuit · 11/02/2024 20:03

Totally empathise with you, it is horrendous!
As above, contact your GP for medication (or out of hours/A&E if you feel that you have become dehydrated). You might have to try more than one to find one that works.
Ice lollies are good for getting some fluid in.
The charity 'pregnancy sickness support' have a great website and helpline.
Have a look on Google for 'RCOG nausea and vomiting in pregnancy' - an updated version has just been published and may be helpful in case your GP isn't very well informed. The appendix has some useful documents.
Look after yourself and I really hope you feel better soon x

P.s for some reason water isn't tolerated well with morning sickness or hypermesis gravidarum..I haven't been able to drink water since 5 weeks and I'm 16 now! So maybe try to sip juice, squash (ice cold is good!) or sips of flat full fat coke I found good too! Good luck!

Surroundedbyfools · 11/02/2024 20:09

Sorry ur feeling rubbish. I had HG in my first pregnancy and can tell u I tried abso every suggestion and nothing worked. Hopefully after ur first trimester it’ll settle for you. My only (gross) tips are … try to be mindful if what ur eating and drinking and pick things that aren’t to harsh throwing back up. Nothing too hard, spicy etc. if u can’t keep much down defo speak to the doctor ! Sending all my sympathies it really is savage

Jadelr · 11/02/2024 20:28

@Sara1988 Thankyou for the tips I'll give them a try aswell as try and get booked in with the GP!

@CheeryBiscuit Thankyou for the advice much appreciated! I'm going to contact my GP in the morning for some medication I think, I'll try flat coke too because the other day I did manage to drink some sprite and it did help me feel a little better seemed to settle the nausea x

@Surroundedbyfools Thankyou for replying, with your HG did it just start as morning sickness then get gradually worse or? I just can't tell if this is normal sickness or the beginning of HG

During my first pregnancy the only thing I could keep down was porridge. The sickness eased around 16 weeks so hang in there.

MotherofPearl · 11/02/2024 21:01

Oh OP, I feel for you. If you're not able to keep water down then it may well be HG. I found it easier to suck ice cubes than drink water.

Having been through really bad pregnancy sickness three times (two out of three pregnancies I had a HG diagnosis), my main advice is:

  • Rest as much as possible. Tiredness makes the nausea and sickness so much worse. And at least you can't feel nauseous when you're asleep. If you work you may need to get signed off for a while.
  • Medication. Keep going back to GP until you get something that works for you. Ondanestron is the only one that worked for me. If you're very dehydrated a trip to A&E for IV rehydration can help you to feel less horrendous.
  • Eat and drink whatever you feel like. I'm afraid you will have to ignore healthy eating and go with whatever you can keep down. Babies are good at extracting the nutrients they need. Things I found helpful: ice cold lemon barley water in tiny sips, nibbles of salt and vinegar crisps, jelly, potato waffles.
  • As a PP said, take a look at the Pregnancy Sickness Support site for more useful information.

Good luck!

Shortbreadfingerss · 11/02/2024 21:32

If your vomiting is this bad at 5 weeks pregnant I would suggest you see a doctor to get on top of it as you may need medication. They can sign you off work too so you can rest as tiredness makes sickness worse.

WithOneLook · 12/02/2024 01:38

Defo see the GP. They try not to use ondansetron if at all possible as it's been linked to cleft palate/lip. This is a new finding though as it was routinely used during my first pregnancy 2 years ago. It was offered to me in hospital though as an emergency measure and don't be afraid to go back to the GP if what they offer doesn't work. I've had 3/4 different drugs this time and they can be used in combination. In my case they've stopped the sickness but not the constant nausea, which is almost as debilitating but not dangerous from a dehydration perspective.

pinkandredflowers · 12/02/2024 10:59

Defo get meds from GP. If unable to keep fluids in go to ane they'll give you a drip and meds and can usually go home same day

Sending strength, it's horrible!!

badwolf82 · 12/02/2024 11:47

I had intense nausea around this time. It thankfully didn’t get worse but I did have 24/7 nausea until around 12 weeks.

things that helped: never letting my blood sugar get too low, eating regularly but small amounts, having sweets like jelly babies at hand all the time (my doctor advised this), eating something just before bed (biscuit, fruit etc) to avoid waking up nauseated in the night, peppermint sugar free gum, avoiding motion as much as possible (car rides, watching things on TV with shaky cameras etc), avoiding meat and greasy food (apples, yoghurt, crackers and cheese were my main safe foods), very cold fizzy water

things that didn’t help: ginger tea or anything strongly ginger flavoured made it so much worse

Jadelr · 12/02/2024 11:51

@badwolf82 Thankyou for the advice! I did find I managed to keep a can of sprite down lastnight that seemed to help with my nausea. But as soon as I wake up in the morning the nausea hits me like a tonne of bricks, I end up going back to sleep because of how intense it is. I've not been sick at all today fingers crossed 🤞 but I've not been able to eat anything yet due to the nausea. But I think I may be making it worse by not eating, just the thought of food makes me want to vomit 🤢 it's so difficult I don't deal well with sickness or nausea so I know this is going to be very hard for me I hope it eases up at some point 😞

Seriously the thing that saved me was jelly babies. Especially the citrus flavoured ones. My doctor told me that there are a bunch of ginger sweets that are sold as morning sickness “cures” but it’s actually the sugar and not the ginger that works.

When I felt too sick to eat I would eat a few jelly babies and usually within half an hour or so I would feel better. Then follow up with an apple or yoghurt or something.

The good thing about the sweets is that you get that instant hit of sugar without the volume of something like Sprite or Coke in your stomach which might make you feel nauseated.

I’m sure any sweet would do the job - i just like jelly babies!

Jadelr · 12/02/2024 13:05

@badwolf82 Thankyou I'll have to get my other half to grab me some jelly babies haha! Did you find your nausea fluctuated day to day like yesterday was horrendous I was throwing up etc but today I've not been sick as of yet. So was just wondering if it can kinda fluctuate?

The nausea is still the same I suppose just not the sickness today. (Suppose there's still time 😂)

badwolf82 · 12/02/2024 13:17

It definitely varied day to day, especially early on. Towards 10 - 12 weeks I would have some days where I felt almost normal, then quite bad days again. Sorry. But I did find this time around 5 - 6 weeks to be unexpectedly bad - I thought it would start gradually but it just started out quite bad. I think maybe as time went on I also just got used to the feeling and got better at managing the symptoms.

My doctor’s advice was to try to avoid medications until 10 weeks if possible but if you’re having trouble with getting fluids and nutrition then you might need to speak to your doctor about that.
