Im confused!
Which ones would be best?
Maternity ones?
Night time ones?
Normal ones?

I have actually had a baby before, and from what I remember, the bleeding (tmi) wasnt too bad afterwards, but I want to make sure theres no accidents!

I think the material is different for the mat ones. I bought some from mothercare yesterday and they said something about the material being different so you can be assessed for infection. Having said that I have also bought some extra thick cheap sani towels which I will still use as I found them comfortable to sit on after stitches, etc.

I was told to use maternity pads (not as absorbent as normal sanitary towels) for about 24 hours after birth (was in three days after section) so the midwives could check my loss if needed. After that i used Always Maxi towels with wings (purple pack) and found them very comfy and absorbent.
I took Boots maternity towels with me but thought they were rubbish to be honest, i've heard Mothercare are much better.

I used maternity towels for the first few days, tried mothercare & tesco ones & liked the ones from tesco much more- as the padding was softer & they stayed in place better.

Always do some silk ones that are very gentle on the bashed-up bits down below; much softer and more comfortable than the maternity ones.

MrsTittleMouse · 22/03/2008 17:09

If you get a bit bashed about down under you might find maternity towels a bit more comfortable as they are more cushioned.

With dd I used the huge Kotex night time towels, two at a time, and then switched to the cheapest ones available in Superdrug - about 28p a packet for their own basic brand. I found them better than the expensive ones, and because they are thick and not backed with plastic apparently there is less risk of infection - no plastic means your bits won't sweat so y midwife told me

fledtoscotland · 22/03/2008 20:56

my m/w told me not to use sanitary towels for the first couple of weeks. also the maternity ones have more padding which i def needed

i found boots own ones useless and the best by far were tescos which i ended up using the whole time i bled. have already started to stock up for this one

My dp bought me the tennerlady nappy things by mistake and you knwo what they were fab! Not very attractive granted but extremly absorbent, lasted the best part of the day and cushioned for if you need stitches and meant I didn't ruin any knickers. My mw said she's going to recommend them to all her mums.

Flubdub · 22/03/2008 21:51

Tenalady!

i used the mothercare maternity ones and they were fab. stay away from the babies r us mat ones. they were totally crap for me. i tried the boots ones too but the mothercare ones were the best.

i too was told not to use norma sanitary towels for the first week or so as i would need the extra padding

solo · 23/03/2008 00:37

tesco's or sainsbury...equally good.

WombFor1More · 23/03/2008 09:11

I have always used maternity towels, usually the boots and mothercare ones. I seem to bleed a lot in the first few days and found I was using 2 at a time!!

My mw gave me a great tip, use newborn nappies at least for the first day. That way there is no leaking, they're super absorbant, go all the way round and sooooooooo comfy. Sounds strange but it works

ellasmum1 · 23/03/2008 12:24

I second buying tenalady type pads, very comfy and super absorbant! I used these.

fleasterbunnycircus · 23/03/2008 12:29

I used Natracare maternity towels for about the first week, can recommend them.

eidsvold · 23/03/2008 12:47

instead of maternity ones I used the ones that were the night time ultra ones a lot cheaper and just as absorbent.

I used tesco maternity ones and tesco disposable knickers. I had horrendous tear 1st time and bad tear 2nd time and they were nice and soft and did the job!

PutThatInYourPipeandSmokeIt · 23/03/2008 20:19

I used normal kotex night time sanitary pads - the thin ones (?ultra) not the thick bulky ones. (Sometimes you need to change them more frequently than others as you would expect.

Also bought cheap M&S black big knickers (higher waist) so I could wear them with them. All worked perfectly well and no leaks and hence knickers good to go for next pregnancy.

Alishanty · 24/03/2008 09:52

I used Wilkinsons own brand for a couple of weeks plus Wilkos own brand cheap knickers. I found them fine. I bled for 8 wks so really needed the mat ones to start with. I switched to normal ones after a couple of weeks.

Be careful with sanitary towels that have a sort of plasticy layer that keeps the moisture away from you (like Always) because they can catch on stitches, if, forinstance, you have labial grazes like I did.

I liked mothercare maternity pads at first as they are very long and padded.

Someone suggested I put a packet in the freezer before using them but it didn't work for me!
