I'm 21 weeks and have been absolutely fine throughout my pregnancy. About 2 hours ago I was in bed drinking a cup of tea and suddenly felt sick I went and sat on the toilet, felt very light headed and then woke up on the floor.
I have managed to bash my head and now have a big egg and a headache.
I rang maternity triage who were non plussed and said just ring them back if it happens again and take paracetamol. I've fainted before but only when in real pain never just randomly. Anyone else had this DH thinks I should get checked but don't want to spend hours in A&E!

Firstly, in your condition it’s unlikely to be hours.
pre-eclampsia is the main worry.
get your BP checked and urine dipped.

I say this as someone who had pre-eclampsia, hospital took it very seriously but I felt fine.
if I haven’t made this clear, please go to hospital

I fainted throughout my first pregnancy , on one memorable occasion when visiting our horses my mum thought she would revive me by pouring a 2 litre bottle of lemonade over my head .

Floralnomad.
I know I shouldn't laugh GrinGrin

Haha @Floralnomad mine would probably do the same!
@Mirandawrongs I rang and spoke to a midwife she didn't even mention pre eclampsia and didn't seem concerned at all hence why I didn't just go in. Everything I've read states that fainting is common but obviously I don't want to risk it if I need some kind of treatment. I had a scan yesterday and baby was fine. My plan was to give it a few hours and if I'm still not right ring them and go in.

@JRTfan
if you’re not right in a couple of hours, I’d just go straight in.
I wouldn’t bother ringing, if (I know it’s a big if) anything is wrong quick treatment is required.
I do hope all is well though.

I would go and get checked. So many things can happen in pregnancy both in your head and others. It’s more concerning that you felt sick whilst sitting in bed, it’s not like you stood up and then felt faint. You don’t know how long you were unconscious for and sustained a head injury.

Whoopaday · 10/02/2024 12:39

You say you’ll give it a few hours and if still not right go in, in what way are you not feeling well now?

Hiddenvoice · 10/02/2024 12:45

I’ve fainted a lot during my current pregnancy. I go to a&e everytime as unfortunately I’ve fainted in public places. Most times I faint is when I’m sitting . It could be the sudden rush to get up means your blood pressure has dropped and you’ve fainted due to it.

A&e do their best to triage me quickly but the most common wait is 5-6 hours. With me, they ask if I can feel the baby move, if I have any pain or bleeding.
Maternity triage haven’t seen me any time since my blood pressure has been okay and since I’ve felt the baby move around.

It’s definitely the best idea to go get checked out! You need to get your blood pressure checked and your head since you’ve hit it.

I fainted once when 20 weeks pregnant. Never fainted before. I remember I felt a little delicate for the rest of the day and took things very easily that day, but there were no ill effects or ramifications. I don't think fainting in pregnancy is that uncommon. Just look after yourself today and don't hesitate to contact for medical care if you feel worse at any time.

@Hiddenvoice thanks that must be really scary. I've always had blood pressure on the low side it's a genetic thing which is usually good and healthy, but I guess in pregnancy when it drops that isn't ideal. I've had zero lightheadedness or anything until todays sudden episode though which is what I find odd. Nothing unusual about this morning either at all I usually get up, shower and walk my dogs before I eat anything so my body is used to that..but I hadn't even got out of bed yet today was just sat up drinking tea when I felt that horrible hot, sick feeling.
@Whoopaday I have a banging headache and just feel a bit woozy but I've eaten and drank some lucozade. It's probably the blow to the head making me feel rough which sounds bad but I know the hospital won't do a lot for that I am pretty sure it's just bruised I was sitting down so didnt fall far.
The midwife I spoke to said don't go to A&E but to just call them back if I'm not happy but she couldn't have been less concerned really apparently fainting is common and they dont worry about it if its a one off. Hence why we didn't just rush in..had DH seen me faint he would probably have called an ambulance but I imagine I'd still be waiting now (no diss to the NHS at all I just know the pressures they are under and a pregnant woman passing out probably wouldn't be a priority)

Just an update for anyone interested! Feeling much better now got a nice bruise on my forehead but have felt baby move today so reassured by that (I only feel her very sporadically anyway) Obviously if it happens again I'll go get checked as advised but hopefully was just a one off. Knew I shouldn't have gloated about having zero pregnancy symptoms!
