NT 4mm - NIPT

Hi all

I had my first scan with a high NT result of 4mm. Was offered NIPT and amnio/CVS on NHS. Screening bloods came back as low risk for Downs 1:255 and Patau/Edwards was a lot higher. NIPT was no longer offered on NHS and asked if we wanted to do invasive.

Decided to book for NIPT tests privately, awaiting results. Had a fetal echo done and early anomaly at 15 weeks (all looks okay and she couldn't see any structural anomalies or problems with the heart)

Speaking to a midwife, a 4mm NT result has the outcome of 70% of babies are born absolutely fine.

If NIPT results come back low risk - would you still be worried and opt for an amnio/CVS or would this be enough to stop you worrying?

Hi,

I recently had an NT measurement of 3.4mm. Nothing was mentioned through NHS, screening bloods came back 1:196, so I was worried but not offered anything further. I opted for private NIPT which showed a 1:10,000 chance for Downs, and my recent NHS 20 week scan didn't show any abnormalities either. I queried the NT/nuchal fold with the sonigrapher, who said they don't measure at 20 weeks if it looks normal, but she measured for me anyway and said it all looked fine, got all views of the heart etc and so far so good. I'm 25 weeks now and continuing with the pregnancy feeling fairly reassured. I know NIPT is just a screening too, but I felt it was worth the money for the peace of mind.

That's just my perspective on it and our situations arent identical, but I hope it helps you. Fwiw, if NIPT had come back high risk I would have had invasive testing, but that's largely because I have two other young children and would have chosen to TFMR. If that wouldn't be your decision, then it may be different.

Wishing you all the best x

Hey hun, I’m currently awaiting my NIPT results on NHS as my risk of Down syndrome in my baby is 1 in 137. They couldn’t do the NT at my scan. The wait is tearing me apart as I’m 17+2. If my results are low risk for all 3 syndromes then I won’t be offered the amnio as it’s 98-99%. My answer is no I wouldn’t go with it if results are low risk. Good luck x

The NIPT came back low risk, we have our 20 week scan soon so we're going to see if anything comes back then (hopeful its all fine) speaking to the screening midwife and been given a figure of 70% of babies with 4mm NT are born well and no problems so we're just keeping our fingers crossed.

I have a very similar situation. It’s so scary isn’t it! Thinking of you.
I was called to say my 12 week screening test results were high chance.
1:130 chance of down syndrome at birth.
HCG:2.04
NT:1.7
PAPP-A:0.31
I am 30 years old.
I had the NIPT test done on Thursday and I’m so anxious. I can’t think of anything else whilst I wait. Any advice?

How did you get on? These were roughly what my results come back as prior to NIPT - all come back low risk. Good luck x

I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Sending love. It’s the hardest time I’ve ever had so I know what it feels like. We had a 4mm NT and all the NIPT type tests came back low risk. I ummed and aaahed about having invasive testing and in the end I did. It threw up some unexpected results about an incredibly rare syndrome. I don’t think mine was a classic case because all the doctors were very surprised that it showed something. They were all expecting it to come back normal so there is a good chance that everything is fine for your baby. We were very unlucky but i personally am glad that I did the invasive test.
