Is it possible that I had gestational diabetes and never knew?

I am on my third pregnancy and have been sent for a GTT (it’s next week) which I never have been before. I think I should have had one with my second and it was an oversight that I didn’t.

Reading about GD though I’m really wondering whether it’s possible I had it in one or both of my other pregnancies and just didn’t know? I had two large babies - 10.5 pounds and 9.7 pounds. Both had jaundice. I was always very thirsty and frequent urination towards the end, and with my second they also found I had polyhydramnios (I probably did with my first but they wouldn’t have known). With my first I also remember sweating absolute buckets in the night towards the end (in January).

Is it really possible to have GD that just doesn’t get picked up? Really just wondering.

They test your urine for sugars at your midwife appointments. If you had uncontrolled diabetes, they would have detected it via that. Some people do just have big babies!

@YolandaDavies that’s what I always thought, that the urine or blood tests would have showed it, but apparently not necessarily (google)? Obviously I’ll find out either way next week but just boggled my mind!

It can be possible, yes. Especially if you didn't take the GTT in those pregnancies. Funnily enough though I didn't have mine done in my 3rd pregnancy(naively i felt as though it was something i just didn't need testing for) went into spontaneous labour at 37+5 and my son was born weighing a whopping 8pounds&8oz on 91st centile, had slight bit of jaundice but didn't need light therapy he was/is classed as an LGA baby.. then 4th pregnancy I opted for the GTT at 28weeks due to family history as midwife explaining its important etc(never thought I would ever have it though came as a shock when I got the call to say I did) well had a scheduled induction with him due to concerns that he was going to be a big baby & also had polyhydraminos too so was at risk of cord prolapse etc, went in at 37+1 and he wasn't born until 37+5 weighing only 7pounds&8.5ounces! So not as big as they expected really but I diet controlled my GD anyways so maybe that helped him not put too much on.. but thinking back to my pregnancy last year I did nothing but crave sugary things & I couldn't stop eating & felt constantly thirsty right from the beginning so obviously those were early signs of it! x

@MummyTo4BoysXXXX very interesting! We’ll see what my GTT says, will be such a mind boggle if I do have it….!
If anything I am completely off sweet foods this pregnancy, obviously eat the odd thing here and there but just don’t enjoy it at all.

Yes, it's possible. The thirst and frequent urination should have been red flags for your midwife to refer you for a test in your last pregnancy though.

edgeware · 09/02/2024 13:48

@AinsleyHayes and the 10.5 pound baby should have been a good reason to send me for a GTT with my second yet no one did!

Indeed!

I had GD and my baby was born at 6lb 11oz! Doesn't always mean a big baby.

lilyfire · 09/02/2024 14:02

My first baby was 11lb 3 oz and the GP sent me for a gestational diabetes test after I’d had him and said it came back negative. I suppose she had reason to think the test would be valid and I guess she thought it could have been undetected during the pregnancy.

YippieKayakOtherBuckets · 09/02/2024 14:14

I had an 11lb 9oz baby with no GD!

TheSnowyOwl · 09/02/2024 14:16

Yes it’s possible and even a GTT doesn’t always pick it up.

HowcanIhelp123 · 09/02/2024 14:18

Possible, but those sizes don't mean you had it. My baby was over 9lb also and I didn't have gestational diabetes. In fact I left the hospital after birth a stone lighter than before I got pregnant as I'd had such severe morning sickness!

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 09/02/2024 18:54

Yes my friend had it and they didn't discover till the day before baby arrived

Chocolate101 · 09/02/2024 19:12

I imagine so, not all GD will show up in urine tests. Especially if it’s on the milder side. They should have picked up on heavy baby and symptoms though! I had GD in my second pregnancy (so far so good with this one) and she ended up being 6lb1oz. She was extremely tiny in comparison to what they had been expecting x

Lorie94 · 09/02/2024 19:16

I had it and didn't find out till day before baby was due, I was in hospital when the nurse come round to give me advice and then realised I was in labour basically.
I went in for a check up and then had a c section next day

I was 38w1d at that point and had my daughter the next day, she was 9lb6oz

Everyone kept saying I was just carrying big
