Hi everyone,
I am going out of my mind with worry. My 6 year old son has confirmed flu (he was swabbed) and I am so worried about him but also myself and the babies. I am kicking myself for not getting the flu vaccine but it’s been a complicated pregnancy and i’ve been so focused on getting through the last few months I thought i would have time to get the jab later. I googled flu in pregnancy in the 3rd trimester and read it could lead to stillbirth and I am just so distraught. I guess i am looking for reassurance - does anyone have any experiences?
I’ve called the midwife helpline and they just said if you get it and it gets bad then come in. I’ve masked up at home but I fear it’s too late as I’ve been looking after my poorly son for the last 5 days before knowing it was the flu.
I have health anxiety generally and I am not coping well with this.

Thank you!

I've been swabbed for 'flu in A&E in the NW. I don't think it's that usual?

I might be wrong but I don’t think flu leads to stillbirth, I think untreated symptoms of the flu can increase chances of still birth. For example exceptionally high temps for a prolonged period that raises your core temp.
all you can do is try to stay healthy, have dp care for ds as much as possible, lots of hand washing and cleaning in the house and get rest and fluids. If you get it, and the symptoms get bad, speak to your midwife / hospital and they can help manage symptoms before they become a risk

ok, this happened a few years ago to my friend - she got flu in pregnancy, She was kept in hospital until the birth, and had an early caesarean.. It all ended well though, the baby is now a rumbunctious school child, and fit and healthy

thank you that’s reassuring. I guess the online information doesn’t specify what part of the flu is the most risk for the babies- like is it the fever or the potential complications like pneumonia. I can’t do much now other than be careful and hope for the best. I think being pregnant with twins I am a lot more nervous during this pregnancy more generally!

Thanks again 🙂

All you can do is go to triage if you start feeling any symptoms like palpitations or reduce movement etc.I went in with reduce movement other week & it turned out my heart rate was super high as was baby’s & I had some sort of infection which I was hospitalised for 6 nights. Taken another week or so to get energy levels up & a lot of paracetamol. Final trimester with second & last pregnancy & it’s been rough! They did a flu swab and all sorts so just know you’ll get the care you need if you do need treating for anything. Good luck

I really don’t want this to sound goady, but just in case you weren’t aware, children are also entitled to the flu vaccine every year.

Hope your DS gets well soon, and you’re ok! If it’s been five days of him being unwell and you have no symptoms, that’s promising.
