25kg weight gain?!

So I haven’t weighed myself through my pregnancy as I can get obsessive with weight and have always struggled with it. My BMI was 25.53 at booking. I have always been ‘chubby’ but never ridiculously overweight. I am just completely freaking out. I don’t feel huge as if I’ve gained 4stone but I have 😭

I am due to be induced Monday (39 weeks) and really don’t want to be too hard on myself post baby as I know it can be a really challenging time anyway!

I guess I am just looking for help dealing with this and if anyone has gained similar whilst pregnant?

I have definitely indulged more than I would have if I wasn’t pregnant; but have no way took the p*ss and stuffed my face everyday. I was a keen runner pre pregnancy (4-6 3 milers a week) but stopped about 6 months in as I went through a difficult time and was not in the right mind set so have been quite inactive since November time.

So yeah maybe just a hand hold 🙈😭

I put on more than that with my 2nd. (actually put on half my body weight). Steadily lost most of it over a year after giving birth naturally. Probably lost a stone the day I gave birth and loads in water weight over the next month. I honestly wouldn't worry, everyone is different. You're body is going through alot right now, don't put too much pressure on yourself!

It’s fine.

i put on 4.5 stone during pregnancy, lost it all within a year and now I am the slimmest I have been as an adult

granted- I did go back to exercise at 6 weeks and kept an eye on what I was eating. I didn’t go without anything but I didn’t spend my post partum period eating galaxy bars and supermarket bakery cookies on the sofa like I wished to. Intermittent fasting, 2 meals, one snack or ‘nice thing’ a day like cake in a coffee shop or a pudding after dinner.

Hey, please know that you are not alone with gaining in pregnancy.

With my first I gained about 75lbs, so roughly 34kg and my second (so far, I’m 40+1) I have gained about 55lbs, or 26kg ish. Granted I was underweight with my first, but was at the top end of ‘healthy’ BMI at booking with my second and I’ve still gained more than is suggested/recommended.

I haven’t changed my diet drastically at all and have tried to eat well. I’ve enjoyed a bit more pudding/chocolate but have by no means taken the pee with it.

I have come to the conclusion that I may just be one of those people who gains ‘a lot’ in pregnancy.

After my first pregnancy the weight didn’t want to really shift after the initial baby weight loss and I started dieting at about 3/4 months postpartum. By a year after birth I was at a healthier weight and BMI than I started (so not back to underweight) and had a better relationship with food than ever.

What I mean to say is, don’t worry. We’re all different and go on a different journey. You’re not alone in it.

Thanks girls it helps knowing I’m not alone. I guess I just shocked myself, I knew I’d of gained weight but thought 2 stone not over 4. I can’t believe it.

I know it will come off but I always feel like I battle with weight just to maintain so god knows how I’ll manage to lose 4 stone 😭 but my little girl will be my main priority when she’s here so hoping it will come off without having to do too much once I start eating normally again.

I was down 1.5 stone overnight after giving birth. Baby was 7lbs. [Sorry I am rubbish with KGs] Fastest weight loss of my life! I'm not sure that measuring yourself against others is particularly productive. If there was a real issue, you'd be getting warnings by now about GD.

I really struggled to lose the baby weight and if anything couldn't stop eating. I'm not sure where this fantasy of "breastfeeding will just melt it all away". I snacked constantly out and about on pastries and cake. DD was not keen on any sort of nap so everything I did was super time constrained or on the move. Amazing really given how much walking her about I did.

My top lesson learned was this - make a list of quick lunches and meals, preferably low carb, low sugar and low fat, high in protein. Do it now while you have the time for a bit of research. Shop accordingly. Proper 5 min meals, not the stuff that chefs will claim takes 15 mins.

I started eating proper porridge when DD was about 6 months just before I went back to work. DH measured it out for both of us, whacked it in the microwave while he had a shower and brought it to me in bed [he's fab] before leaving for work as I finished her first BF. It was really filling and kept me going for the morning without lots of croissants.

Stick the list on your fridge door for inspiration - lack of sleep will do horrendous things to your ability to look at a fridge fill of food and not see a single thing to eat other than a cheese toastie. It does even worse things to your resistance levels so avoid tons of sugary stuff in the house. Or to not be able to think of a single thing when you are ordering supermarket food online.

Plan for a treat meal so you have something to look forward to if all that sounds horrendous.

I came out of hospital 10kg lighter than I went in, lost another 5 in first month!

Bax765 · 08/02/2024 17:57

I put on 4 stone with my first as well, but was back to my pre-pregnancy weight really quickly after birth without watching what I was eating.

I think some people just naturally put more weight on and have more fluid build-up etc.

I'm pregnant again now and giving myself an easier time. There's too much pressure already during pregnancy and with a newborn.

You have plenty of time to lose weight further down the line if you find that you want/need to. Just focus on yourself and baby for now!

Firsttimebabymama · 09/02/2024 10:37

You're not alone. I'm 28 weeks pregnant.
I lost 10kg due to awful morning sickness in the first 16 weeks and have somehow still managed to gain over 2 stone already. 🤷‍♀️ I'll admit, I have been eating loads since I got my appetite back.

Try not to worry about it :)

Flopsy145 · 10/02/2024 12:45

I put on about 25kg and my midwife did not make me feel ok about it at all. Had a c section and was probably back down to a little higher than my pregnancy weight within a few weeks, once the babies out your body will settle, a lot of that will be a mixture of baby, fluid, water retention, etc as well as a bit of completely normal weight gain. I didn't try and lose weight after she was born, just the regular walking and breastfeeding I think helped. I honestly wouldn't pay attention to your weight during pregnancy and even for a while after, you're growing a whole human and that's the most important thing!
