Has anyone experienced this during pregnancy? I’ve always been a back sleeper, but obviously stopped this with a big pregnancy pillow as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I’m now 25 weeks and my hip pain from sleeping is excruciating. I’ve tried four different mattresses, endless pillows between my knees/ under my bump/ behind my back, but nothing helps.

Im at my wits end. The pain is on the outside of both hips so it makes no difference what side I sleep on. I constantly wake up in the night trying not to scream. I’m at the point now I’m going to have to sleep upright on the sofa. I just want to sleep on my back 😔

I have this but only in my left hip. It still hurts to sleep on both sides though. I turn over every hour or so. I’ve been going to physiotherapy and it helps somewhat but it doesn’t fix it.

Sometimes around 5am I can’t take it anymore so I will sit up propped up with cushions and sleep with a travel pillow around my neck to avoid too much neck pain.

My doctor says you don’t have to be on the side, just slightly at an angle to avoid compressing the vein, but I’m
honestly too scared to try it.

Yes this is me. I'm 26+1 and I have it in both hips. I've been sleeping with a pregnancy pillow since 10 weeks and with hindsight I think I moved onto my side too early and that's why I'm suffering so much with it. I'm normally a stomach/back sleeper.

My left hip is worse which means it's hard to sleep on my left-hand side although they say that's the better one to sleep on which is really frustrating. I saw a physio who confirmed it was bursitis not SPD/PGP, it feel like most of the advice out there is for SPD/PGP so I've found it really hard to find advice on how to help it.

My friend who also had it recommended a memory foam mattress topper and one of those has just arrived so I'm hoping that will make a difference. I've also bought a huge 1mx1m pillow to go between my legs so the whole of my legs are supported all the way down to my feet (in addition to my u shaped pregnancy pillow). I think that will help take the pressure off my hips because I still feel sore just having something between my knees.

I definitely notice that it's worse days after I have done lots of physical activity, which means I'm tempted now to just do very little physically just so I'm able to sleep. Have you found that?

It's so difficult, looking forward to hearing other people's tips.

I had this in my first pregnancy (not officially diagnosed but pretty sure that's what it was) and it was awful. I'm usually a front sleeper and in retrospect I moved onto sleeping on my side way too soon. So by the time I was full term my hips were in agony. I used to put extra blankets under my hip to cushion it more.

This time round I have zero plans to side sleep until absolutely necessary. I'm still sleeping on my back sometimes (24 weeks) but will stop that at 28 weeks. I mostly sleep on my front still, with a pillow half under me to allow room for the bump. It's a lot more comfortable and I wish I'd done it last time as I have very little hip pain so far. There's no concerns about lying on your front like there is with your back as far as I'm aware. You just have to position your pillows to give the bump some support!
