Missed Miscarriage: Waiting or Surgical?

MrsBlue1986 · 07/02/2024 17:51

Just found out I've had a missed miscarriage on Monday. The HB stopped.

I've had 10 miscarriages before.
Only 1 previously where we have seen a heartbeat and it stopped. I took the medical route and it was absolutely awful. I was in agony.

Has anyone had experience of a missed miscarriage snd it has naturally gone on its own?

The hospital only want me to wait 2 weeks before they intervene. Unless it goes naturally I'm opting for the surgical route.

Any input please? Z

@MrsBlue1986 I was given misoprostol a couple of hours or so before I was taken in for surgery. You should have an assessment with an anaesthetist fairly soon after you're admitted so you could discuss with them if you've had a bad reaction to it previously.

I’m sorry for your losses.

I’ve had one miscarriage that completed naturally and two subsequent ones where I opted for an ERPC under a general. I’d always opt for that, at least the physical bit is over.

I'm so sorry OP. I had my scan yesterday at 12 weeks to discover my baby had passed away at 8 weeks. No signs at all, it's so devastating and such a shock.
Given it's been around 4 weeks and I've still had no signs anything is wrong I've opted for surgery tomorrow under GA. I'm terrified as I haven't had this before, I've only been in hospital to give birth to my son.
You'll know what's right for you but for me I just want to move on and grieve, I don't think I'll get closure until the surgery is done. It just doesn't feel real.

MrsBlue1986 · 07/02/2024 20:52

@jellyfish2 oh no I am so sorry to head that too! Especially without knowing this whole time.

Whereas due to previous losses I've always had scans every week from 6 weeks. I know it doesn't change any outcome though by having so many.

You've definitely made the right decision there especially since it's been 4 weeks and nothing has happened up to now. I wish you well tomorrow. If you feel up to it, please let me know, if you remember. Hope you're OK.

I think I'll wait the two weeks (technically 11 weeks), and opt for surgery under local. I've read if you're below 10 weeks then local is the best route. The embryo only measures 6.5 weeks anyway.

Oh you poor thing. Probably less physically painful to wait and let it happen but it can take a very long time.

jellyfish2 · 07/02/2024 21:00

@MrsBlue1986 thank you, I will let you know.

MrsBlue1986 · 07/02/2024 21:01

I'd personally rather wait for it to go on its own.

But the hospital said that the max I can wait before they intervene with surgical or medical is 2 weeks. That's not very long really. 😕

I waited nearly 3.5 weeks and it didn’t pass naturally. The wait for me felt like torture. The not knowing when it could happen.

I can’t have medical management tablets as I have a health condition, so I had surgical under general. Like previous posters, I was in and out in a day. The anaesthetic was fine, quite a pleasant feeling coming round. I had no side effects and recovered quickly.

If I had the choice again, I wouldn’t have waited, I would’ve gone straight for surgery. I just wanted to try again.

I hope you’re through it soon xx

@Gymbelle thank you for that! I have read so many horror stories about the surgical route under local anesthetic, saying it's so painful etc that its freaking me out.

How long were you in the hospital for from start to finish ?

How long was the procedure ?

Did you honestly feel anything??

The fact they're only giving me 2 weeks to wait, I feel I may have to go down this route 😞

@MrsBlue1986

I found the emotion pain far worse to be honest. I had the mva 2 days after getting married….. I had to wait 2 weeks even though they knew it wasn’t viable (early scans through miscarriage clinic).

I arrived in hospital for about 10 and had a consultation, took a tablet and had to wait an hour, then had the procedure and left about 4pm.

I could feel movement but it wasn’t painful. One of my miscarriages was, I was 13 weeks and had a 2 day stay in hospital due to blood loss. I was more relaxed as it was controlled.

it’s a very personal decision, listen to your gut. You will get there, I’m writing this with my four month old laid on me. I never thought it would happen but it does ❤️

I had surgical under GA. It was very easy physically. Minimal bleeding and virtually no pain. I was 10 weeks ish when it stopped growing and nearly 12 weeks when I had it done. Got pregnant again next cycle successfully

jellyfish2 · 08/02/2024 18:38

@MrsBlue1986 just to update you. I had my surgery and all went well. Staff were so lovely and gave me my own room. GA was great, I just drifted off and woke up from what felt like a deep sleep, wanted to sleep longer! Minimal bleeding so far and I was completely unaware of everything. I've been given a lovely memory box from the charity Simba with little knitted bears, a couple of little butterfly charms, smallminitted blanked and cards with lovely words to be able to write a message to baby. It's been as nice an experience as can be in this devastating situation. Just waiting to get out but I'd recommend the surgery. Hope you're doing ok x

MrsBlue1986 · 08/02/2024 19:06

@jellyfish2 oh I'm so glad it went well for you. Sounds a nice experience. I've temporarily booked the MVA for in 2 weeks time. I had a scan today though and they can see a bleed area above the sac so I'm hoping this means I might miscarry naturally. Which is my preferred choice!! Fingers crossed i do! I wish you a speedy recovery xx
