So this may be a strange one and ive recent asked a what now question on this forum. Which i am super pleased with feedback from you lovely mommas!

But im struggling with food, because my partners like you sure you can eat it? Is that safe during pregnancy? Bla bla bla.

So badicslly i want to eat peperami like the little snack ones, i used to have them with my lunches and now im scared i cant and im not too sure what else to have in my lunch box anymore!😂

Grapes? Ive read multiple different things on google that says yes thats fine and no during the first trimester. IM SO LOST!

I also have grapes for my lunch.. im losing out in a lot of things i enjoy for my lunch!

So is there a definite yes and no list for foods because i feel like at this point with my OH being so crazy about it (understandable) that i just dont know what to eat anymore! Ive looked on nhs website and it doesnt say much!

Thank you in advance for asnwering possibly the most bizzare question!

They do question soft ice cream including McDonald’s based on the listeria risk , just depends on how much you trust your local McDonald’s to be cleaning their machine lol

dementedpixie · 07/02/2024 12:38

The mcdonalds ice cream machines have automatic cleaning cycles so the ice cream will be safe to eat. There is nothing on nhs guidelines to say you need to avoid soft serve ice cream

Just follow the NHS guidelines and don’t Google. It’s really not that restrictive at all. And read the book ‘expecting better’. Makes you realise how over cautious most of the guidance is.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 07/02/2024 15:02

And please do not allow your partner to suggest that anything you ate before was related to a miscarriage. That’s a very misleading and unhelpful attitude. Nothing you did caused it. Please tell them that.

regarding the soft ice cream issue , it may not be on the generic nhs website but you may find nhs trusts have it on their leaflets that they send to expectant mothers

i have included the leaflet from the trust that I work at as an example

That looks like an outdated leaflet as lion stamped eggs are ok to eat raw and lightly cooked. It also doesn't mention you can cook the cheeses and the cured meats to make them safe to eat.

I followed this advice, but it was just a few little things that wasnt on there. Theres so many different foods in the world, i was resding i cant eat mayo and i went to the midwife on my first (now mc'd) and she wasnt too sure before saying if its pasturised i can.

Think i just need to stay off google😂

Yes stay off Google!! And if it's not on the NHS website it's safe to eat!! They can't possibly list every safe food xx
Good luck xx

I avoided soft or blue cheese, pate, raw egg and raw fish. That was it.

Yet in France they look at you like you have 2 heads when you say you can't eat these as you're pregnant 😂

Luckydog7 · 07/02/2024 18:17

It's very cultural as to what is it isn't recommended. Sushi is usually recommended NOT to eat because of raw fish but in Japan it's considered a great nutritious food for pregnant women! Same for cheese and cured meat in France.

You need to avoid food that are a raised risk for food poisoning or bacteria is what the nhs says. So uncooked, cured or marinated meat or fish, rare steak, oysters etc plus unpasteurised dairy products so any blue cheese but tbh I ate lots of these things during pregnancy so a lot of it is simply an abundance of caution.

@JRTfantheres around 75mg of caffeine in tea so should only be drinking about 2 cups of tea a day, you’re right with coffee though 1-2 cups depending on whether instant or filter
@PickledScrump there are 47mg of caffeine in the average cup of black tea according to the Good food website and a few others. NHS says 75mg but that seems to be the only one saying that high! Anyway it's a guideline as long as you aren't chugging 10 cups a day it'll be fine.

Your partner needs to back the fuck off!

Follow the NHS guidelines. Ignore guff you find on the internet - a lot of it is nonsense and some is advice for other countries with different food standards.

PP have given you really good advice. It is absolutely vital that your partner understands that you are an adult and you can make your own judgments here. I know it seems excessive to mention this when it’s ‘just’ about food but controlling behaviour commonly begins or increases during pregnancy.
