Dry Hyperemesis getting worse as pregnancy goes on

Hi everyone currently 16weeks pregnant. Had nausea since around 7weeks but it was manageable. At 11weeks it became a lot worse. For the last 2weeks iv been off work as it’s been unbearable. I feel so poorly no energy, at the start if I ate the nausea subsided now it’s just permanant. I’m on prochlorperazine and helped at the start but not doing anything now. Wondered if anyone else has had this where you feel worse not better as the pregnancy goes on? Thankyou x

Hi OP

So sorry you're suffering. I had it from 6 weeks until I gave birth to her. I was signed off work from 13 weeks as I just couldn't back it anymore. A combination of tablets and regular hydration and vitamin drips kept me half sane. I really hope yours eases 🩷

Yep I had the same, signed off work from 7 weeks, quit job at 24 weeks... It seemed to ease a little after that but the tiredness was unreal, every day felt I had run a marathon. Bizarrely the vomiting returned during labour and after I gave birth.

It is truly awful, you just have to rest and sip water through a straw as best you can.

SparklyOwls · 06/02/2024 20:10

And as you say, this was nausea 24 hours a day.

This would be my worst nightmare. Really feel for you ladies. I just had ‘normal’ nausea for a few weeks.
Hope yours improves xx

I had hyperemesis Gravidarum with all 3 of my pregnancies. It was absolutely horrendous. Any joy of being pregnant is taken away as you literally survive a day at a time. Only people with or who have had HG understand. I literally felt like I was dying. I was being sick at its worst, 30 times a day and was like the above ladies, signed off work until delivery. Even laying down and moving my head made me want to vomit. I have no advice but to say, the old cliche, hang on in there. When your baby is here, and the placenta is out, it’ll just feel like a bad dream :-) take each day one at a time. Hugs

Hi CMG92,

I am currently pregnant (33 weeks) and was diagnosed with Hypremesis gravidarum at 9 weeks with relentless constant sickening nausea and vomiting countless times each day. Dehydration led me to call 111, who put me on Ondansetron, this controlled the vomiting but not the nausea. Then I went back to the doctors and asked for Xonvea. Both of these together have led me to lead a pretty normal and functional life and pregnancy. Would recommend 100% speaking to a doctor to hopefully prescribe these tablets (although I'm aware it's a bit of a postcode lottery to whether your area prescribes them). Definitely worth asking about, they have absolutely changed my pregnancy. I've been pretty nausea free since 16 weeks. Also contact the "pregnancy sickness support" who have all the information on this medication and how to survive Hypremesis 😊

Thanks everyone for your replies. I’m so sorry you have been through or are going through the same. It’s the most debilitating feeling. Been awake since 3am with it, had a snack but still the same. I’m just praying it passes at 20weeks 🙏🙏

I dry heaved for a long time during pregnancy and the only thing I found helped was reflux medication. The Dr prescribed me dissolvable ones

I was the same OP, the worst experience of my life so far.
i spent 6mths with that feeling you get when your about to be sick, but I wasn’t ever sick. Tried a few times to make myself sick but couldn’t. it wasn’t as bad in the least couple of months.
the only things that kept me going was that when she arrived it would stop.
i had an emergency cs under anaesthetic, they didn’t give me nausea drug so when u came round I was sick everywhere. It broke me.
i really really struggled to bond with my child, things still aren’t great now.
I hope you have a better experience

I had really bad morning sickness, but admittedly not HG. There was only one thing that made my nausea disappear, and that was sipping on a mixture of lemon wedges (quite a few), real ginger chopped up into chunks, and a spoonful of honey, all topped with hot water. I'd make a huge Thermos full of it every day and sip on it constantly.

I appreciate this might not take the edge off for some people but just want to share in case it does offer any relief

SparklyOwls · 07/02/2024 14:30

Wow as someone said above, I also had the same issue where I couldn't move my head as would trigger vomiting. I used to eat and lay on the bathroom floor is one position for two hours not daring to move. I haven't heard of anyone else mentioning this before.

Cartrucktractor · 07/02/2024 14:35

Sorry op, it's hell .mine seemed to get worse at 10 weeks and stayed terrible til 17 when I suddenly started feeling a lot better, maybe only a couple of voms a day and not the constant nausea
