No morning sickness?

Before you start with the lucky you! I'm only 5 weeks, but with my first pregnancy I was nauseous and vomiting so much I lost 15lbs and my job. This time around it doesn't feel like anything is even happening. No breast tenderness, no vomiting, I'm a bit tired and have a big appetite, that's it.

I'm just worried because my best friend had a similar experience and her daughter was born with a serious genetic condition. I've always heard nausea is a sign of a strong pregnancy.

I suppose my question is has anyone had this experience? Nausea with the first but not with the second and a healthy baby at the end?

Sorry, not genetic, chromosomal

My morning sickness didn't kick in until week six at least and then it didn't really get bad for a week or two after that.

Probably a bit early to think you've escaped!

Mine was awful first time around from 4 weeks onwards, it was a nightmare, I'm just surprised it hasn't started already!

My symptoms were a bit all over the place, which made my anxious. My midwife told me often that symptoms do not reflect the health of the pregnancy.

Additionally I have a friend who had awful morning sickness, even after a scan had confirmed a missed miscarriage. Symptoms only settled after medical management.

It's a very stressful time, but I hope you stay nausea free!

Different pregnancies can hit different. My morning sickness was much stronger with my girl pregnancy than my boy one- if that might be a factor?

Lemoonada · 05/02/2024 13:05

My first was a boy and that was the awful one, is your girl older than your boy?

How awful for your friend!

Yes you're probably right I think I'm just trying to hold onto clues that might tell me something about this baby

I didn't have morning sickness for either of mine... Both are healthy.
I am sure if there was a correlation between morning sickness and birth defects/ inherited conditions then we would have heard about it.

spiritowl · 05/02/2024 13:12

I didn't have any sickness with my son, and he was born healthy. Mild nausea every now and then but none of the 'typical' symptoms that we are told to expect. It did unnerve me too at the time but midwife assured me it was normal.

No my boy is older- and was more mild than my girl's pregnancy. But it can be affected by different blood groups of the baby in relation to yours as well from memory. I just think you experienced it so very early with your first pregnancy it's naturally worrying you now but if you looked at it against pregnancies in general it would be very normal not to have morning sickness yet. And I was really miserable with morning sickness both times up until twenty weeks when it did kick in!

Gledders92 · 05/02/2024 14:04

I had mild nausea and vomiting with my first and none with my second. As far as I know he’s due to be a healthy baby.
I’ve not heard of any correlation between sickness and genetic conditions either. Each pregnancy is different and that includes the symptoms that may go along with it so I wouldn’t worry about a lack of sickness.

SingingSands · 05/02/2024 14:24

My 2nd pregnancy was like this (a boy) - no morning sickness at all! I didn't have any symptoms at all with him, it felt really strange and really great at the same time.

I had horrendous pregnancy sickness with my first (a girl) so I was totally confused at how it could be so different. Bodies are weird and amazing!

Toda11 · 05/02/2024 14:41

There are so many threads on here for those who only have mild nausea or none at all and go on to have perfectly fine babies.

Sad for your friend but just a coincidence.

Pumpkindoodles · 05/02/2024 14:47

I've always heard nausea is a sign of a strong pregnancy
i think this is just what people say to women to make them feel better about being sick constantly.

lots of babies are born healthy after an ‘easy’ pregnancy with no sickness, there’s plenty of threads on here that confirm that.
also you are only 5 weeks, I hate to say it but there’s plenty of time for you to feel rubbish!

L00k4m3x · 05/02/2024 15:45

With my first I was having waves of nausea from before 4 weeks and then full blown vomiting from 4 weeks. Second pregnancy it was around 5 weeks and now third pregnancy it didn’t hit until almost 6 weeks and I’ve been worse than ever, spending full days in bed crying whilst throwing up. Still plenty of time for it to start.

selfishmeow · 05/02/2024 17:25

I had extreme morning sickness with my first boy until the end of the pregnancy. I'm pregnant with a girl now and my sickness kicked in at week 8 and I was bed bound and hospitalised twice with fluids and then the sickness disappeared at week 18. From week 18 and up until now (week 31) I've felt not pregnant and not had any symptoms since. Right now the only symptom I have is baby moving and constantly peeing.

Lemoonada · 05/02/2024 20:00

Thank you all, these are very reassuring! Sorry to hear so many of you have been so sick 🤢

17 weeks and I've never had any sickness or any other pregnancy symptom

Lillers · 06/02/2024 06:40

According to my female relatives, there’s a trend in our family to have horrendous symptoms with the first pregnancy and not too bad with subsequent pregnancies. I don’t know if they’ve just said this to make me feel better as I’m currently struggling through the first trimester of my first pregnancy 😂
Might be worth asking any relatives of yours who’ve had more than one baby, as there are suggestions that symptoms are likely to be based on a genetic predisposition.
