39 weeks in agony

Hi everyone,

I’m 39 weeks and in total agony at night. I have SPD and feel although someone has hit shattered my public bone with a heavy object. I can’t roll at night without withering in pain.

I have BH/cramps/ cervix pain and lower back pain which wakes me up thinking it’s finally time but goes once I’m able to change position. I need to pee constantly and getting out of bed and those first few steps are so so painful I’ve never felt anything like it. I do have crutches from physio near to the bed but it’s still bad.

Once I get to the toilet (5/6 times a night) I get sciatica which nearly takes me out everytime I sit upright on the toilet. Then I can never get a whole wee out and I end up on the toilet for ages.

I’m exhausted from the lack of sleep I’m getting. Despite wanting to try for a vaginal birth, I would take a c-section tomorrow if I could just to get out of this hell I’m in at night.

The days are fine, I have slight discomfort but if I’m walking/bouncing on the ball etc I’m ok. I spend the evenings in the bath trying to soothe everything. To add to the mix I’m all swollen down there from pressure.

Surely this isn’t normal :( I see so many happy glowy Moms and I just feel like this.

That sounds incredibly painful op. What has your midwife said? Mine was fairly dismissive of my spd which was milder than yours sounds. Could you try your gp? I wonder if they can give you some better pain relief?

Thank you for replying @WonderingWanda I’m sorry you were dismissed, my MW got me a physio referral which was really quick but it seems the physio don’t really have much info either worryingly. They told me all the exercises I am going are right and keep up with wearing my support belt when needed ( I hate wearing it as it makes baby struggle so I worry it’s pulling her body up as her head is activated)

I just wish there was more help out there for SPD, I’ve heard of people having chiro help but I’m so close to my due date I worry that La one off appointment wouldn’t be useful :(

I had bad SPD like this with my first. I could hardly walk at times during the day also when close to the end (not helped by fact he went two weeks over !)
Honestly - it’s so shit but there’s not a lot that really helps. One baby is out you should hopefully be back to normal, and you are really close..

yeah I’d be asking what’s the best pain relief you can take at night time.
lying down in bed was hellish torture. Could you find some more comfortable, safe way to position yourself? Prop yourself up or the like?

I’m sorry to hear you struggled too and to go 2 weeks over!!! That’s honestly one of my biggest fears :(

I’m really glad to hear that everything feels much better after birth, I honestly don’t know how women would cope with a newborn on top of this pain. I’ve been doing all the old wives tales to start labour going, but I do think I’m gonna call my GP today and see where we stand with pain relief. My only worry is that pain relief wont be as effective during labour if I start now for my SPD.

Firstly, I’m sorry to hear you’re in so much pain. I had pelvic girdle pain/SPD in my first pregnancy and have had it in this one too. Physio has been great but doesn’t take away the pain.

I’m glad you’ve been given crutches, they were a battle for me to get hold of, it’s sensible you keep them by the bed.

Have you got a pregnancy pillow to put between your knees and support your back at night? That may help.

I would recommend talking to your midwife about pain relief options. I think you are able to have co-codomol, which seems like it would benefit you to use when things flare up at night. It might be that it would need prescription due to pregnancy as it’s very unlikely a pharmacy will dispense it, or they might prescribe a stronger dose that is genuinely prescription only.

This website gives you an overview of the effect of codeine (the strong part of the co-codomol) in pregnancy, which I’ve seen used by doctors in the past:

Your midwife may be able to advocate on your behalf to the GP to prescribe it for you as we all know how hard getting a GP appointment is at the moment.

I would also discuss with your midwife about potential induction. With my first this was something that was on the cards due to the level of pain I had and the fact I couldn’t move around, get up the stairs to my bedroom and etc.

Wishing you all best and that baby comes soon so you can get some relief.

I had SPD pain in the last pregnancy and the only way I could help it was to sleep sitting up on the sofa and now with this pregnancy on a bean bag in bed. Any pressure on the hips around the hips causes unbearable shooting pains.

You sound like you are having such a rough time. I hope you find some pain relief soon.

@WonderingWanda @Gledders92 @Silverfoxlady

Thank you got all replying it means a lot - thought I would update you all, the pain got really bad in my back and I had 0 sleep, was leaning over the kitchen side and I felt the baby drop 😳

Just made my way to triage where I’ve found along with the SPD I’m having contractions, 2cm dilated and cervix is ripe and ready! They debated keeping me in as I live far away but told me I could head home and try speed things up by getting really relaxed if I felt happy to do so! I’m gonna have some massages off my DP and get him to run me a bath! Let’s hope baby is here asap so the pain can finally be stopped! X
