NIPT sex result

Hi all

i am wondering if anyone has had a shared experience - although I think it may be pretty niche!

I had NIPT blood test done at 10+2 weeks. Results came back low trisomy and gender Male. At the follow on scans (20weeks, and a private 4D scan) they were unable to see sex due to positioning of the baby. I had a scan at 28 weeks and 3 senior sonographers were pretty sure it was a girl. At 29 + 4 weeks I had a growth scan and again a girl was confirmed. The company I did the NIPT through did a redraw of my bloods to look at the sex and again it came back Male. I have been referred to Fetal Medicine and Clinical Genetics who are looking into the case but I am freaking out big time! I am so incredibly worried of a chromosome discrepancy or an issue with my baby’s development. All scans has come back really positive and all show a healthy baby but the test not aligning with the anatomy scan is really throwing me off. I hugely regret having the NIPT determine the sex as if I just went by the scans I think I would have been much more confident (ignorance is bliss type attitude) in the last 10 weeks of pregnancy. I’m 30 weeks now and feel there’s a long journey ahead.

I have been offered an Amniocentesis when I get to 32 weeks, but I am also anxious about the risks of that!

if anyone has had any experience that may help please do share, I’m going out of my mind with worry! Many thanks

I had NIPT and an amniocentesis both confirming male chromosomes.
Scans couldn’t identify male anatomy. He’s definitely a boy. He just hid himself pretty well and as he got bigger the relevant parts were even harder to see.

Hope you get some answers soon.

KikiCB32 · 04/02/2024 22:56

Many thanks for responding. I am hoping this is the case. If you don’t mind me asking, how many weeks were you when you had the scans that were unable to identify male anatomy? Thank you

NIPT is rarely wrong for sex. Do you have son? Apparently male DNA can live in it’s mother for a while which could throw it off but I’d imagine that’s a really small percentage.

I can understand your concern but also know that ultrasound isn’t perfect and they more often say girl when it was a boy than vice versa.

KikiCB32 · 04/02/2024 23:06

Hi there, thank you for replying. This is my first child and no previous pregnancies. Yes I agree, very rare to have a false boy from NIPT, I have a consultant doing a medical scan next week which will hopefully be more in depth so maybe it is a boy that was just hiding? All the senior sonographers on separate occasions were so definite it was a girl though, hence the worry. I was also worried if it is a boy, are there developmental issues if he has not developed any male anatomy yet? I feel so worried and uncertain!

I haven't had this specific concern but I've just booked my NIPT for a few weeks and if you are going privately you can have the sex chromosomes screened for abnormalities too so if you have concerns over it, it may be something you can query with your NIPT provider. Really hope all is OK xx

16 weeks private scan
20 weeks anatomy scan ( but my trust won’t spend extra time looking)
21 weeks with amnio
32 weeks
36 weeks

never once able to see his bits!

KikiCB32 · 05/02/2024 07:51

@Jojobees Oh really! That is really interesting as I had 16 weeks, 20 weeks and then a 4D at 27 and 28 weeks and they couldn’t either. Did they just leave sex as inconclusive or did they confirm girl? All was well when born ? Many thanks for posting, this has provided some reassurance x

No, as I’d had NIPT and an amnio they said he’s a boy who likes to hide from us! There was never any question that he didn’t have male anatomy, just he was determined to lie in any way possible to avoid showing himself!

Gledders92 · 05/02/2024 14:13

Ultrasound is general I don’t think they can guarantee the sex of a baby - there’s a reason you hear about people being told they are expecting a boy and finding out they are having a girl and visa versa!

The blood test is likely the most reliable one, especially if it looks for the presence of Y chromosomes.

What was the outcome?
Going through exactly this. Having to wait for the amniocentisis results is killing me

I think it's very rare for NIPT to be wrong (something like 98% accuracy I think) but nothing is foolproof! If it comes back 'boy' it means XY had been detected in the DNA. There is a very slim chance this could be a previous male child, a vanishing twin or some sort of cross contamination but that's very unlikely.

Scans however rely on human interpretation and are not as accurate. It is also more common for the mistake to be that way around (mistaking a boy for a girl) rather than the other way round.
I guess things can be hidden and out of view with an active baby whereas once seen, male genitalia is hard to mistake.

Nothing to do with NIPT but my good friend was told girl at about 4 different scans, had the pink nursery decorated and all girly things etc then gave birth to a beautiful baby BOY.

Sorry just realised this is an old thread - also interested to see if we get an update from OP

KikiCB32 · 14/09/2024 11:15

@Mayjay23 Hi there I have private messaged you. But I have a healthy girl who has a variant of Turner’s syndrome. It’s worrying but we have had very positive genetic results and check ups at the moment. She is genetically and physically female though x

Hi sorry this is an old thread but I’m just wondering, did the Turner’s syndrome not show up on the NIPT results? Or did your NIPT only include chromosomal disorders?

Michelle292 · 03/08/2025 21:34

Also interested in this, have had the NIPT which all came back low risk, opted to not have gender revealed. But I can't help but still worry as I know its not 100 percent and is just a screening.

Brother has a child with downs. Iv spoken to the hospital I'm currently 14 weeks and they've said they wouldn't perform an amnio based on my NIPT results being low risk. I'm trying to remain calm and optimistic but honestly struggling.

KikiCB32 · 03/08/2025 22:29

Hiya @cc99xo the NIPT only did screening for chromosomal conditions not gender. We only knew something was amiss when the anatomy scans were showing female but the blood work came back male. They were coming back at Male as the remnants of a Y chromosomal hung on longer than usual, when it fell off, it took a part of the X chromosome with it. So she has a variant of Turners as a result.

I didn’t even know there was an option to test for any gender conditions! Feel free to private message if needed!

KikiCB32 · 03/08/2025 22:35

Hi there @Michelle292 all my results came back correct, as even though the gender came back male, it was because it was picking up the remnants of the Y chromosome that basically “hung on” for longer than normal (when it fell away, it took some of the X chromosome with it which is why she has a variant of Turners). The screening for the chromosome conditions were all low risk. I totally understand why you would be nervous! I would hate to give wrong advice, but if you can make it to the 20 week scan, I think this will give you some more reassurance. Speak to your midwife as well, I struggled with health anxiety during pregnancy especially with the gender discrepancy, they arranged some counselling for me and it really helped. Please feel free to message if I can give you any more info or help in anyway! X
