How much new newborn clothes to buy ?

I'm 20 weeks pregnant on my first baby and found out we are having a little girl , I'm just wondering how much newborn clothes is enough ? I haven't started buying yet but obviously I don't want to go overboard on newborn sizes when they will grow out of them quick enough.

Newborns really just wear vests and sleep suits for the first few weeks, maybe a few cute outfits for when you introduce her to family etc. they can go through 3/4 changes a day. Personally I bought lots of expensive sleep suits which were not worth the money. I would buy a few packs of cotton multi packs in 0-3 months so you have enough for maybe 3 days without washing them. I would also buy a couple of packs of 3-6 months.

Hardly any. Mine didn’t even fit in newborn.

1 pack of 3 basic newborn vests and sleep suits

1month - 8 of each vest and sleepsuits

0-3 month cardigans are fine from start, just fold sleeve over the first week or two if needed. And buy any nicer sleepsuits in 0-3 not smaller

fyi newborn is for 50cm long. My son was 53cm born. So they really won’t last long unless baby is really tiny

Well, it depends.
They grow them out fast, but I used a lot in the first few months.
Mostly because they often leak from the diaper- I did not have the energy or time to wash them so I throw them out. I know some mother who has 5 sets and they take very good care of them.
What I found useful is not to buy newborn size. I started from size 56 (0-3 months)- they were big in the first two weeks but my daughter grew into them fast.
I had some newborn size that were gifted to me and I could only use them for a week or two.

Congratulations OP - how lovely! I really wouldn't go overboard as I think you'll find you'll be bought a lot of clothes as gifts both before and after the birth. I'd say perhaps half a dozen or so vests and babygrows as a base and then indulge yourself with three or four outfits that you love on top. Honestly that will be enough. In my experience [5 girls!] some of the newborn clothes were hardly worn if at all before they were outgrown.

Sorry to jump on this thread but I’ve got a question in a similar vein.

What size should you be looking at getting if your baby is small? I’m consistently tracking at just under the 50th centile and been told I’ll probably have quite a small baby. Will she still fit 0-3 months or should I be looking at getting a few tiny baby bodysuits just in case everything is too big for her?

Don't buy any - controversial take.

Get 1-3, roll up the sleeves. You won't regret it. IF someone gifts you newborn, then fair.

They'll grow out of newborn within a week or two.

I bought about 10 bodysuits (half in newborn and half in size 0-1m). Same again in sleepsuits. I just went for plain white for all of them. One cardigan in 0-1m. My dm also knitted a baby cardigan and hat. And a pram blanket. Two baby sleeping bags. Stacks of muslin squares. Two swaddles.

We were then gifted sleepsuits, outfits, etc. Plus vouchers so this covered a bit of newborn time and some 0-3 and 3-6m so I could just pick up what I needed on top after baby arrived.

I found the opposite. I didn't move into 0-3m for at least the first 6 weeks, and the 0-3 just drowned them before this. All babies are different, so yours may outgrow as fast as this poster, bit it's not a given.

My first wore newborn for a week so for my second I’ve just got a couple of packs of vests and a couple of packs of sleepsuits in newborn size then I’ve got 0-3 stuff.

My ds was 8lb so exactly on the 50th percentile, and he was in prem baby sleep suits for the first three weeks. Plus vests or a little cardigan. He was a skinny little thing.

Then a pack of five new born sleep suits, plus the outfits that people inevitably gift you.

congratulations.

@Outliers I'm with you... I would class newborn size as 'nice to have' but you can manage without if you have anything other than a very small baby.Save your money ,apart from a couple of pkts of vests and babygros 0-3 to tide you over.when baby arrives you will find out what suits you and what you have been given and you can by anything you like on any day of the week at supermarkets or Amazon.

minimiz · 03/02/2024 12:44

Don't underestimate how crackers people go when babies are born. We were inundated with clothes so I would recommend buying the bare minimum to start with and fill in any gaps later.

I would suggest a pack of newborn vests, a pack of newborn sleepsuits, a cardigan, a hat and some socks to keep you going and wait until present giving has stopped.

Tiny sized baby clothes are usually for babies under 6lbs ish so I would have thought newborn should be fine if you are tracking along just under 50th percentile.

Don't buy much of anything.

For a first baby you will quite likely get gifts off lots of friends and family. I'd wait until you know what you're given and then just buy any top ups of what you need.

To start with I'd just get a pack of newborn vests/sleep suits and a pack of 0 - 3 months.
