Low lying placenta on c section scar... help!

Hi everyone,

28 weeks pregnant with DC2, previous c section 6 years ago.

No concern whatsoever shown by sonographer or consultant when telling me I have a low lying placenta that likely covers my previous scar... should I be worried that they are overlooking this potentially large problem? Despite politely refusing the idea, the consultant was quite forceful on the concept of a VBAC. It's not the biggest of hospitals and what if this went undetected until mid way through a section?! Aghhhh.

I'm so worried, should I be?! I'm so concerned about major blood loss, placenta accretia and a potential hysterectomy.... any kind words/words of wisdom/calming stories would be so appreciated.

I had a low lying placenta with my first baby and the hospital were very relaxed about it at 28 weeks as they said it’s very likely to move. It hadn’t moved by 32 and they showed a bit more concern but again not enough to make me feel worried. I googled things and made myself panic, once I spoke with my midwife she reassured me that everyone would do what’s best at the time of delivery. I had another scan at 38 weeks and the placenta had moved. I had a c section and all went smoothly, my surgeon double checked in the morning just to make sure the placenta and baby were in the position she was expecting.

Please speak with your midwife about your worries, hopefully she will be able to reassure you. Not sure where you live but in Scotland they can’t refuse you to have a c section as it’s a personal choice but I’m sure if you argued your case and explained how concerned you are then you’ll be okay.

Are you concerned about placenta acreta? This is where the placenta can grow into the scar.

they can look for this using either ultrasound or MRI

Also, with DC3 my placenta was completely covering both my cervix and my previous CS scar. I had an “emergency” CS and the consultant scanned me to look at the extent of my placenta. He had to cut through it.
