And if so did you/baby have any complications?

OP posts:
Temporaryname158 · 29/01/2024 20:26

No I didn’t, but why would you?

it’s adding nicotine to your blood, plus a whole host of chemicals in the ‘scents’ etc that you are breathing into your bloodstream and the long term effects are unknown

Xxmaddzz · 29/01/2024 22:01

@Senso21 yes, I did. I gave up smoking and went onto vaping. No complications. You should be able to get help through the midwife for a ‘stop smoking’. They’ll help guide you ☺️

tempnameforadvice · 29/01/2024 22:19

I honestly don't get why anyone would do this. No one is that addicted.

Yeah, must be so easy to quit the most addictive substance known to mankind...

FWIW OP no, I didn't vape/smoke during pregnancy but it's a damn sight safer than cigarettes (if you smoke), and I would highly recommend reading Allen Carrs Easy Way To Stop Vaping at the same time. You can vape whilst reading it until the end.

MamaBearsss · 29/01/2024 22:26

Are you vaping OP?

tempnameforadvice · 29/01/2024 23:11

@Strokethefurrywall I was a smoker until I found out I was pregnant with my eldest. Stopped that day.

Yes. It's easy. When you have an actual life growing inside you. So yeah, been there, done that.

Lunafreja · 30/01/2024 16:17

I used to smoke and had been vaping for about a year - the day i found out I quit all together.

nicotine is proven to reduced blood flow to the placenta which impacts baby’s development. Nobody will tell you it’s safe. It’s really not worth it.

StartedWithACrisp · 30/01/2024 18:18

We will never know the full effects of vaping until a couple years time when they start seeing the effects on babies/children who grow up with it. In the interim, we already know it is very bad for lungs etc and there are so many chemicals in there that it is potentially a big risk to continue.

I don't smoke or vape, but I haven't been able to stop caffeine 😭😭

mponder · 30/01/2024 18:36

@picklesandcucumbers I just went onto decaf. Even stopped drinking coke and tried their decaf one.

Megifer · 30/01/2024 18:37

It's better than smoking op and it's an addiction like any other so I will reply with that in mind instead of getting all judgemental and say if its very hard to stop cold turkey switch to low/zero nicotine and try and reduce it where you can.

As a side my MW was lovely about this and I found it very difficult and stressful to stop smoking (and had dreadful physical symptoms too) cold turkey. She 'allowed' me the odd cig here and there which actually really helped as I wasn't being treated like shit (which causes stress, which causes us to reach for a cig etc) and I did stop after 2 weeks and iirc only had about 4 during the rest of the pregnancy.

Good luck, don't beat yourself up if you slip. None of us have been completely risk free during pregnancies. You can do this!!

Viewfrommyhouse · 30/01/2024 18:38

Yes.
No.
No.

Youvebeenmuffled · 30/01/2024 18:41

All current research suggests vaping is safe during pregnancy, so is the use of patches/gum etc.

nicotine isn’t harmful, it’s everything else in cigarettes that does the damage and ups the risks of complications.

you should have a maternity smoking cessation team who should be able to help, there are lots of reasons why it can be difficult to stop, but if you can move over to one of the better options you’d be giving your baby a much better start

IzzyMas · 30/01/2024 19:06

I stopped smoking the second I found out I was pregnant, and I didn't move onto vapes. I just suffered along.

Mystic94 · 30/01/2024 19:09

I vaped in pregnancy. I did reduce the nicotine strength though, no issues with the pregnancy. When midwives have asked if I smoke I just say I vape, gave up smoking cigs 7 years ago and nobody ever says anything. I think professionals are all in agreement that whilst it's best to stop, it's nowhere near as bad as smoking cigs as there's no carbon monoxide in particular

rainydaysandwednesdays · 30/01/2024 20:35

To all of those saying vaping is safer than smoking.

Some horrid synthetic shite, made in a factory in china, laced with god knows what poisons, cased in plastic and oozing with phthalates and then lit electronically for you to inhale deep into your lungs. Sounds great, lovely.

At least we know what cigarettes do, they have been around for a long time. This myth that vaping is so much safer is nonsense and nobody could possibly know the long term effects. Short term, common sense suggests it's probably killing you as well.

Nttttt · 30/01/2024 20:40

No and that’s horrendous that you would risk your child’s health based on this. You’ve not said is there any help to quit you’ve just asked if it will cause complications which to me seems you’re not even going to try and quit.

I vaped prior. It makes me cross that people are too selfish to quit or attempt to quit. I would even have paid for hypnotherapy or anything (probably cheaper than vapes in the long term.) My body forced me to quit before I even knew I was pregnant, my body just said nope and I couldn’t anymore.

picklesandcucumbers · 30/01/2024 20:49

@mponder

I drink decaf tea/ coffee and diet coke, but my morning fix needs the caffeine. I've just accepted it now - and try to keep under the 200 mg

momoftwo11 · 30/01/2024 20:53

Sorry but you need to try and quit for your unborn baby. No excuses, it's dangerous and your responsibility to put your child first now.

tempnameforadvice · 30/01/2024 20:59

You can have 2 small or 1 regular coffees when pregnant (<200mg).

You can't smoke. Or vape.

OurfriendsintheNE · 30/01/2024 21:17

You can't smoke. Or vape.
Well you can, clearly. OP it is up to you to make that decision for yourself and for the baby, it’s nobody else’s body to police. I stopped cold turkey but I didn’t have a shitload of other stuff going on in my life that might make that extra difficult for some. Although I will say that of all the times I did attempt to stop smoking that was by far the easiest time and the only time it stuck.

It’s not particularly useful to ask for anecdotal evidence on mumsnet. There will be plenty people who vaped and all was fine with the baby but that’s not to say there are no risks associated with it. It would be better speak to the smoking cessation team and get yourself equipped with proper information and support.

Blomdd · 30/01/2024 21:39

I vaped for years. Stopped the day I found out I was pregnant. I'd tried to stop many, many times but for some reason it was easy when I knew I had a life growing inside me. OP I would be really honest with your midwife and ask for help.

1boy2girlys · 19/03/2024 23:33

My Baby was born wheezing. She was then diagnosed with chronic asthma at 18months old. She's now 7 and is under 2 consultants at 2 different hospitals and on alot of meds. I smoked 16mg cartridges throughout my pregnancy. So yes I believe the cause of her illness is due to the vaping. I've got two other children and not 1 have asthma as I didn't smoke/vape back then.

The disposable ones are unregulated, meaning they can be filled with shite.

regulated brands - totally wicked have only 3 ingredients and none of them are known for causing issues/side effects.
