Early pregnancy nausea and overeating

I’m nearly 7 weeks and my nausea has ramped up this week. I am miserable. The only brief relief I get is eating (salty food mainly) for about an hour but I’m now stuffing myself which is probably making the nausea worse. Has anyone had this? Any tips on healthier food that sort of helps the nausea? I’m worried I’m going to absolutely balloon if this is me eating so much in early pregnancy. Thanks in advance!

I am a week ahead of you and had the same, but I think on week 6…it’s like a black hole opened in my stomach and I was eating dishes greater in size then Im used to. But for me the stuff I want to eat changed every week so probably for you will aswell. Week 5 I ate pizza and what not and week 7 was more healthier food. Whole food.
also the time of the day when nausea hits you might change. Before I never had it very late-before sleep. Afternoons and evening I did, but not like when literally going to bed. I guess we just learn to control it better with time. Everyone has different foods that ease the sickness, for me it’s apple mineral water.

Thanks - I think you’re right. I had a huge pizza last night ha! And I found initially the sickness was just morning but now it just sort of never goes (I am able to sleep a lot though so that helps). I find an apple on the morning helps with it first thing plus applestiser is good too.

I’m only 6 weeks and feel nauseous. The only thing that seems to ease it is eating. If I get hungry and feel really sick.
somedays I can only stomach oatcakes, pretzels etc, others I scoff loads of roast veg, hummus and berries. Guess you can’t worry too much as long as it’s making you feel better

I’m 6 weeks today and the nausea is horrendous at the minute. Because I’m finding it hard to eat when I’m feeling nauseous, when I have a brief window of not feeling sick I’m eating as much as I can in order to keep up my energy, but like you I think that’s ultimately making it worse.

I was like this too at 7 weeks, I ate whatever I wanted as I couldn't stomach certain things. I had random dinners like just a bowl of chips 😂

I'm on week 9, almost 10, and it has gotten a bit better. I felt EXACTLY like you in weeks 6-7. I've figured out things that are more healthy that I can eat. I have 2 small breakfasts. Small-ish lunch. Generous snack. Small dinner. Snack. And it works.

I can eat peas, bananas, berries, grapefruit, potatoes and sweet potatoes - all no problem. And I add a bit of other things too. Switched to brown rice/wholegrain pasta. Oh, and dried fruit. Lots of it. Some tofu. Ocasional egg. A bit of meat but not a lot.

You want to be careful with constipation- i got horribly horribly constipated on all the pure carbs I was eating so I really had to find a way to introduce fiber.

I mean, I still feel a bit shit. But it makes me feel better that I am eating better. And less constipation => less bloating => less nausea.

The nausea is horrible, I’m now 7.5 weeks and every afternoon/evening is bad gagging, watery mouth and trying not to be sick. Haven’t been sick yet but this is pretty awful. Am eating regularly as it seems to be the only time I don’t want to throw up. Even talking about it is making me gag

Yeah I’m the same. I get the build up of saliva in my mouth and it’s horrible. Almost 9 weeks now and it’s not much better. I’ve put on weight because the only relief I get is eating. Truly awful! The second trimester can’t come soon enough

I'm 21 weeks and had this for the first 15 weeks. Only time I didn't feel sick was if I was eating, particularly craving salt and crisps (which I never eat). I feel huuuugee but just trying to accept it in the knowledge I can sort myself out in the future.

It was also a 99% sign that I was pregnant with a boy. So very different to my daughter's pregnancy!

Good luck!

Oh really? I’m also craving salty foods - I don’t eat chocolate anymore (which is unheard of)! What was it like with your girl?

Yep, exactly the same here. It’s horrible! I haven’t put on weight but am eating a lot more. Sure it’ll catch up on me. I’m particularly bad evenings, getting to the point where not sure I can eat meals anymore.

Samwins · 11/02/2024 19:54

I’ve also gone off chocolate which is weird!! Sweet foods aren’t doing it.
funny you say about the boy, I was told that was the sure sign for a girl 😅

Exactly the same for me - I don’t crave sweet foods except sour sweets to suck on. Ha I don’t know how much stock to put into old wives tales but it’s fun to guess anyway!

Frequent small meals/snacks rather than eating lots in one go - progesterone rises during pregnancy and delays stomach emptying so if you eat large amounts you’re more likely to bring it back up (on top of all the other hormones that induce vomiting). I’ve been eating lots of bread (unfortunately my nausea is still going strong at nearly 20 weeks). If you’re struggling with fruit and veg/fibre then I’d look at adding in a stool softener to make sure you don’t get constipated as well! You could try fybogel but it makes me feel sick without pregnancy…

I’d also see your GP/midwife and see about getting prescribed something - there’s several options for vomiting that we know are safe in pregnancy. I don’t know where I’d have been without cyclizine!

Thank you! I am finding eating every 2 hours does help. Still nauseous and salivating which is horrible but haven’t been close to vomiting today. Small meals have also helped thanks.
im due to fly next week for a holiday and the thought is making me gag. Seeing midwife tomorrow so will see if they can give me anything for the short term
