Hi has anyone taken cyclizine in early pregnancy? I'm just stressing about any side effects regarding the baby. I need something as this all day nausea is wiping me out 😩

I did for the first half of my first pregnancy. No side effects whatsoever, but on the flip side I didn't feel it did much to help the nausea unfortunately. Maybe I had too low a dose.

In my second pregnancy I had the cyclizine prescribed but didn't bother as it didn't help much. The only thing that gave relief was avoiding certain foods, and constantly sucking fruit gums and other sour sweets, which have unfortunately given me tooth decay...!

Pregnancy sucks. I hope your sickness eases soon

@Mumoftwo1312 oh no that's rubbish. I'm so fed up. With my first son I was sick everyday with him but I'm sure once I was sick I felt ok. Second son had a bit of sickness and nausea but really don't remember feeling this rubbish all day! It's really knocking me about and trying to keep the pregnancy a secret from my boys is getting hard. I'm reluctant to tell them as we've had 3 consecutive miscarriages before this pregnancy.

I had two HG pregnancies and was in hospital most of them. I was pumped with a whole variety of anti sickness and both kids are absolutely fine. Obviously it's your choice but I'd take it. One thing with cyclizine I found was it absolutely knocked me out so is good if you can be in bed but not great if you have to be up and about with the kids

I'm really sorry to hear about your losses op, that must have been so hard.

I've got no good advice about the sickness because I never found a good solution beyond dietary changes - eg I had to avoid all onion (even had to avoid tomato soup, lasagne etc), and constantly sucking sweets to avoid vomiting. I'm a teacher and the urge to vomit during a lesson was dreadful!

I'd give the cyclizine a go because it doesn't do any harm to the baby, the gp had no concerns about prescribing it to me. It might work better for you than for me.

One thing my ob-gyn friend told me is, you have to take the cyclizine regularly for it to work, and it doesn't work instantly, it sort of builds up. I think maybe it didn't work for me because I kept forgetting it so I wasn't taking it regularly enough

Just wondering how I will manage to swallow it as struggling to take my vitamins 😩 oh it's such fun isn't it x

I found cyclizine was ok if i took maximum amount i could and never missed a dose or was late..i found as soon as i missed one, sickness would be back with a vengence and i would have to go into hospital to get ontop of it again via sickness injections.
.
(You cant stop being sick if you cant keep down a tablet to stop it lol)

@Pickles2023 sounds horrendous having to go to hospital 😢

I was diagnosed with HG after my uncontrollable retching / throwing up led to vomiting blood due to the acidity! Awful times.

cyclizine helped for me, in that it helped me not to vomit so much. I was however constantly dizzy / mind numbingly fatigued and basically living the life of a vegetable. I preferred that to the projectile vomiting and overwhelming sickness though,

currently 17 weeks pregnant and little one looks healthy in all the scans we’ve had so far! Not a harmful medication to take , it’s also given to people who have severe motion sickness.

good luck !

I've had good experiences with cyclizine. First pregnancy it made all the difference. Second pregnancy I've needed prochlorperazine in combination with the cyclizine, because neither is enough on its own.

As previous poster said it builds up in your system so you only get the full effect after taking it regularly for a few days. I was drowsy for the first couple days but it did wear off and after that I had no side effects.

Don't worry about risks to the baby, they can't do randomised controlled trials on any medicines in pregnancy, but cyclizine is so widely used that there are large observational studies - if it caused any harm to the babies we would know about it by now. You also have to think about the risks of not medicating (for me this was anemia from not being able to eat, and antenatal depression from not being able to leave the house) - these are very real but often ignored in favour of hypothetical unproven risks from medication.

If I were you I'd definitely give it a go, but don't hesitate to go back to the GP if it doesn't help (or doesn't help enough) as there are several different medications you can try, including in combinations.

Good luck, I know how hard it is - it won't last forever!
