Cyclizine

Has anyone tried cyclizine? And if so, did it work?

I have the most intense nausea and dry retching, it's really affecting me. I've tried everything listed online and nothing is taking the edge off. I'd probably prefer to be sick as then both sensations would probably disappear. I'm due to be in the office a few days a week now and pretty sure people will click on when I'm dry retching daily and would rather wait until I'm at least 12 weeks.

I had this with my first but it left in the second trimester but it wasn't as bad as this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated 🤍

I have just uploaded a post asking about this too. We posted at the same time by the looks of it lol. I'm desperate to not feel sick all day but scared about taking anything.

TallulahTaboo · 28/01/2024 12:36

@My2boysaremyworld well it's comforting to know someone else feels this way but sorry to hear you are.

I'm not sure if it works with nausea or just morning sickness and keen to know. It does say it's safe to take whilst pregnant but think it can only be prescribed by a GP, so whether or not they do is another story I guess 🤷🏼‍♀️

@TallulahTaboo I msg my midwife in the week and she said to speak to my GP and ask for them

I have been on prochlorperazine since 11weeks. Had nausea from 6weeks but it really ramped up to the point it was overwhelming. I think nausea is worse than actually being sick. The tsblets I have took a few days to kick in and I actually felt worse before I got better. 15weeks now and still on them as my nausea is particularly bad in afternoon/evening. Hope your tsblets give you some relief soon x

My dc are 12 and 15 now. I took cyckizine in both pgs with some effect. There are other anti sickness medications available that I found more effective. The most effective for the nausea was actually IV cyclizine administered by drip as an in patient, but that had rather "trippy"'side effects!

Look up the website and FB page of the charity "Pregnancy Sickness Support", who have lots of practical, emotional, legal and medical advice.

The essential thing is to keep hydrated, even if all you can do is melt an ice cube in your mouth.

If you are too unwell to work, the law (Maternity Act 1999 I think) says that pregnancy related sick leave must be recorded seperately to other sick leave, and cannot be used in disciplinary action against you. Maternity Action can help with this, if it is a problem.

Both my dc are completely fine btw.

@My2boysaremyworld @CMG92 @IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads great thank you all. Will pick up with my MW and GP this week and see what they can suggest. Thanks 🤍

I found it if no benefit but just made me drowsy. They moved me into something beginning with P and that was little help either. I work in occupational health and I would recommend speaking to your manager ASAP to explain your issues and ask for short term adjustments to remain home working.

justmewithmylifetoday · 28/01/2024 19:24

I took Cyclizine during my last pregnancy as I suffered with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. It helped massively for me. I would try and take less tablets on better days, but continued to take it for the majority of the pregnancy, just one tablet a day in the end.

It did make me feel very tired, and a bit floaty, the sort of feeling when you're a bit tipsy. I don't drive but not sure how it would affect this if you do. For me the benefits outweighed this as I had been admitted to hospital twice and got to the point I couldn't drink water.

Best of luck with it all OP. Pregnancy nausea is the pits!

WolvesDiscoandBoogaloo · 28/01/2024 19:25

I take it regularly. I found it much better for nausea and vomiting than prochlorperazine. It's a genuine life saver for me.

I think it might make you a bit drowsy, but it's hard to say. I'm not someone who is very easily made drowsy so I don't get that at all. But it is an antihistamine so it could well do.

I'm not pregnant so I'm afraid I don't know anything about taking it for morning sickness. I do wish I'd had some when I was pregnant because I was wretchedly nauseous for the entire time, which was miserable.

justmewithmylifetoday · 28/01/2024 19:26

Also, worth mentioning whilst I was diagnosed with HG, I wasn't sick as much as women can be with it, my main symptom was intense nausea, extreme smell aversion. The nausea was debilitating.

Sparklediamondstar · 28/01/2024 19:35

Hi, I've been taking it for 3 weeks now and I'm 10 weeks. Started with domperidone which stopped working after a couple of days. The cyclizine has mostly stopped the vomiting but I'm incredibly nauseous all day and have an aversion to all food and struggling to eat anything. Moving around makes it worse so I'm laying down all day. Needless to say I'm going back to GP tomorrow to try the next thing. It's probably worth trying for a few days then moving onto the next medication if there's no relief. Good luck

Same here. I've recently been reading about "dry HG" where you are so nauseous and it's just as debilitating as vomiting all day

Hamster7909 · 28/01/2024 19:42

HG sufferer here. I really regret not taking antiemetics earlier in my pregnancy. It was debilitating and it was only getting hospitalised at 15 weeks that sorted me out. Still sick throughout but it was manageable. Had a cyclizine and Prochlorperazine combo from then and then weaned off the Prochlorperazine in the latter stages. Baby is here and fine! Just wish i had taken it earlier as I then had growth scans throughout and was basically a husk by the end! Early intervention seems to be key. All the best for your pregnancy!l.

I took Cyclazine. I'd have preferred not to take any medication but I didn't have a choice as was struggling to keep food and fluid down, so medication was the best option. It helped me manage a bit more food and I think I only threw up about 3 times in total once id started taking it, compared to a few times each day. It made things much more bearable.

RB05 · 28/01/2024 19:51

I was on it for pretty much the whole of my pregnancy. I had to take it 3 times a day to keep the nausea at bay.

lenalove · 29/01/2024 14:21

I am currently 17 weeks and took it daily from around 9 weeks to 14 weeks as I was nauseous 24/7 and couldn't cope. I don't think it worked any miracles but did take the edge off and I felt better knowing I had something up my sleeve rather than just riding it out.
