Well, I am sure it would be okay, but personally I wouldn't want to go abroad so near to the end - but that's just my oppinion!

xx

I flew around the world at 22 weeks and was fine, not sure I'd like to travel at 35 weeks though!! Have you checked with your travel insurer if you're covered? Even the European cover, the E 1-11 card, might have some restrictions after 34 weeks. It's worth checking it out. We drove all the way down from North to South Island of NZ and my back got really painful so bear in mind the extra pressure at 35 weeks. It might be worth rescheduling if you can, it's fine to fly in the 2nd trimester and you don't feel too big or knackered. Good luck!

I'm 37 weeks now, and personally wouldn't have wanted to go away a couple of weeks ago - not very comfortable sitting in a car for long periods, and you'll prob be feeling pretty 'nesty' by that time - everyone's different though. At the mo, sleeping is a challenge, and even strolling is to be taken at a slow pace.

Airlines won't fly you after 35 weeks anyway, so it's good that you're not going to attempt any flights.

On the practical side of things, you'd need to be sure you're near medical care should anything happen, be able to speak / translate to the nurses / docs, check insurance will cover you, and take your midwife notes.

Hmmm... from my own experience, I would be tempted to rebook and go at about 26 weeks when you're feeling a bit less whale-like, and less close to a possible birth! I went to Cuba in my 26th week, loved it, and whilst I was starting to feel tired, wasn't nearly so knackered and huge as I am now.

Question to ask yourself (apart from the discomfort factor) is that if you were to go into labour, do you really want to be in another country, where you may not speak the language, and away from the midwives who have been monitoring you throughout your pregnancy, and friends and family?

i had 2 of my children at 35 weeks naturally so it can happen early, each one with an hour labour !!!!

sophiewd · 20/03/2008 15:54

I didn't feel like going anywhere at 35 weeks, will reiterate though you should be aware that you should take your medical notes with you, can you reschedule?

finallypregnant · 21/03/2008 14:28

Your travel insurance probably won't cover you to start with plus you'd need to check that the ferry or eurostar will allow you to travel anyway.

When people say 'I wouldnt want to travel anywhere at 35 weeks'...

I've got a wedding to travel to, 4 hours away from home. At 36/37 weeks. Am I mad thinking this is doable?

Was thinking of traveling on the friday and back on the sunday, to spread it out.

Hi, congratulations on your pregnancy!

I went to Spain for a week at 34 weeks. The E111 insurance did cover me but I couldn't get travel insurance for anywhere outside Europe. I checked that we were near to a decent hospital! We went with BA who will fly you to the end of the 36th week of pregnancy.

I was a bit fat and uncomfortable by 35 weeks so I would consider flying rather than driving - less time sittting in one place!

Also I'm glad we stayed in a nice villa so i could sit in the sun all day, I was far too fat to walk very far!!

Would echo Decafinated's idea about going away in the 2nd trimester when you feel fab. This was our plan but the bloody cabin crew decided to go on strike and we had to rebook for later!

zebedee1 · 24/03/2008 17:14

Carolbrad - can youi accept the invite and then see how you feel nearer the time? I'm sure the bride and groom would understand if you weren't up for it so near to your due date! Everyone feels differently at different stages of their pregnancy and you can't tell how you'll be feeling. I ducked out of 3 weddings in the first 4 months of my pregnancy because I felt so tired and sick but was partying till 4am at a hen do by week 39!

finallypregnant · 24/03/2008 21:00

The E111 doesn't exist anymore I don't think. Obviously, this is something you need to look into yourself though.

zebedee1 · 25/03/2008 07:08

E111 is now called EHIC - european health insurance card.

Bluebella · 25/03/2008 13:47

Carol - I would say you'd be okay to go to the wedding if you feel up for it. If your staying in the country and it's only for a few days, I would feel comfortable with that personally.

My brother is getting married in Cornwall ( I live in Yorkshire) when I'll be 38 weeks. I won't be going, especially as my family has a history of premature babies.
