Transverse/oblique lie 35 weeks??

Hey guys,

my baby was breech from 32ish weeks , I tried different positions to move her and moxibustion.
I went for a check up today with my GP and he said she is now in an oblique lie/transverse?? He said if there isn’t a big movement in the next week or so that it is very unlikely she will get out of her position.. any positive stories..

also have seen online that transerve position can require a hospital stay due to risks?

thanks in advance! X

My DD was tranverse right through until 36 weeks then turned on her own. I wasn't warned about a hospital stay but I was told if she didn't turn I'd need a csection. Might depend on the exact position though.

I can't give you any magic stories, just my experience, my last son was transverse from 20 weeks and simply wouldn't move at all, they did weekly scans from around 35 weeks and at 36 weeks I had to stay im hospital as the cord was dangling between his legs and he was kicking it so they were worried about preterm labour and the cord dropping which would require immediate intervention. After a week in hospital they did a c section to be on the safe side. I think the reason for concern with me was because one of my children was born at 36.5weeks so they didn't want to risk that happening.
It was the safest thing for me and the baby though and at the end of the day, thats the most important thing xx

BoyMomma4 · 29/01/2024 22:23

Sorry to add to this he was specifically transverse, footling breach, so his head was under my right rib and his body across but his legs were dangling down not scrunched up.. he's not one for doing things the usual way even now haha. To note, this was so uncomfortable, if you're little one has been moving positions, it could still happen, mine was like this for ages, stubborn little Mr he is xx

Hi @Kilminchy123 have you got another scan booked to check position again? What's happening next for you?
I had scan today at 36w3d and my baby is also transverse breech, we've known he was breech for several weeks. He's also big- 91st centile - and we were told today there's less than 5% chance of him moving naturally into head down position now.
After our scan we waited to see consultant and she talked us through the three options of ECV, planned section and vaginal breech birth. I'd already done a lot of research and thinking but it was still good to get info and questions answered, she was lovely and spent a long time with us.
I decided to decline ECV and have booked a section in 3 weeks time (will be 39w4d) which I'm feeling positive about.
We discussed the risk of cord prolapse and what to do if that happens (call an ambulance and wait in knee to chest position). The other main risk now is that I might go into labour before the planned section date, in which case it would be straight to hospital for an emergency section.

I know this isn't the type of story you're looking for but hope it helps you know what choices you might be presented with next if your baby doesn't turn.

Oh and I have another scan booked at 38w3d to check growth and position again

Kilminchy123 · 30/01/2024 10:14

just to update the thread, I had a scan last night in the MAU as I developed a wicked pain in my upper stomach area and what appeared to be a blotchy rash under the skin almost. They checked baby and she is now head down which is amazing but doctor couldn’t reassure me it would stay that way of course but just praying. I had noticed the awful discomfort gone.

@BoyMomma4 thanks so much for your response! It’s great to have an insight into what can be the case should she decide to move back as she has seemed quite unstable , going from oblique (might be similar to what you refer to as being diagonal almost) , to transverse and now suddenly head down. I’m not getting my hopes up yet as I’m scared she will turn back 🥲 .

@Hankthehonk thanks so much for your response! I wasn’t due in until Friday but like I said above baby has moved as of now. I felt a massive relief from the discomfort and lots of movement around my ribs . I will say I spent a full day on my hands and knees scrubbing skirting boards and hoovering every inch of my house so I’m not sure if that position helped to give her more space 😂😂 hoping you get the outcome you are hoping for also. You seem very informed which eases a lot of that anxiety I imagine. Glad you feel positive about the c section also I think that’s half the battle!! I wouldn’t have minded the c section only for my toddler at home and I felt bringing home a new baby as well as not being able to do the things we normally do would be just too much for him 😩 so just praying she isn’t too unstable and she stays put. 😃🙏🏼

@Kilminchy123 That is great news, I'm so pleased for you that your baby has turned. I hope she stays that way and that you get the birth you are hoping and planning for. Keep going back to MAU if you have any more pain or worries.

I admit I am a bit worried about section recovery as I also have a 3 year old, but sadly she's got very used to me not being able to lift her or be physical these past few months due to pelvic and bump pain. She is big enough to be understanding, so I think that will stretch to my recovery as well. Although she has been saying a lot "once the baby comes out, you'll be able to do x, y, z" for a while now! Thankfully my husband, mum and sister can also help a lot so we're sort of planning the few weeks after my section together which is making it feel more doable. There's a certain comfort in knowing what's happening now for me, even if it's not the ideal scenario!

Good luck x

I’m 36+3 and baby is still unstable lie. I was admitted over the weekend due to potential labour but discharged and now have to go back in on Friday until the section if she remains unstable. I’m utterly gutted as the bay was awful, loud, noisy and boiling hot, another woman with an hacking cough every 20 seconds and everything felt dirty and uncomfortable. I missed my two other DC and DH. I’m getting really tearful at the prospect of having to stay in that bay for 2 weeks. There’s nothing in the hospital as it’s quite a small one, apart from a canteen and a chapel!

NoWordForFluffy · 30/01/2024 22:35

@LadyofLaundry88, I was admitted for an unstable transverse lie at 37 weeks and they brought my ELCS forwards by a week to 38 weeks. It wasn't the best week of my life (heatwave; grim on the antenatal ward), admittedly.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 30/01/2024 22:36

I turned up in labour at MLU and baby was lying oblique, I was almost 40 weeks, the lie had never been picked up previously.

Blue light transfer to main hospital. Docs broke my waters thankfully baby moving to head down. Whilst waters were broken surgeon was in the corner of the room, as it would have been a crash section. I didn't realise realise why there was a surgeon in the room at the time, but remember him asking if all OK after waters broken and he the left.

Baby born an hour later and discharged less than 6 hours later.

LadyofLaundry88 · 30/01/2024 22:42

@NoWordForFluffy that brings me hope thank you! It would take it down to a week which would be more manageable psychologically.

God, heatwave sounds brutal. Especially on those plastic mattresses! I know I sound whiney and ungrateful but honestly the NHS has become something that can only offer treatment, not care, so it’s just a miserable and exhausting environment.

NoWordForFluffy · 30/01/2024 22:46

The only good thing was I finished the cross stitch I was doing for DS before he was born (other than the personalisation, which was done afterwards)! The rest? Best forgotten.
