haemorrhage after birth of 2nd - what to do about a 3rd?

i had a very quick/easy birth with both my children. They basically came flying right out of me and I didn’t tear etc. with my first born they injected the thing in my leg straight away to make my placenta come out, however with my second I asked them not to as I wanted to avoid unnecessary drug use but I started haemorrhaging.

They then used the placenta injection on me plus about a million different other things were injected into me to try and make my uterus contract - lost 1.1 litres of blood but eventually the bleeding did stop.

My question is - if I have a third child what is the best way to go about this? haemorrhaging was obviously terrifying at the time and I clearly don’t want to die 😂.

Does anyone have any advice on having another child after haemorrhaging and what’s the safest way to go about this?

thank you ❤️

If the bleeding was due to uterine atony/retained placenta then have the injection. If it was due to something else (clotting disorder/infection, etc) then ask what could be done differently next time round. Labour ward would be more sensible than a MW led unit or home. Also worth thinking about having IV access in pre-emptively - it’s much easier to do before any blood loss happens. They may also cross match some blood so it’s available a bit quicker if the same were to happen again (depending a bit on the local set-up, your Hb, your size, etc). HTH.

I had a major delayed PPH with my second. Due to blood issues rather than retained placenta or infection. I needed eight pints of blood and had the crash team etc. I went on to have six more children but was always classed as high risk. I did have a further PPH with #3 but nothing like the same severity and then I was fine with the next five, although I always had an IV thing put in while in labour in case of problems.

Best of luck!

So I had low platelets my entire pregnancy. Never below 100 but always sat at around the 110-120 mark.

My entire placenta came out in one go - so it wasn’t a placenta issue.

From what I remember it was that my uterus wasn’t contracting and the doctor was massage my tummy like mad and eventually it did start to contract.

Is there a way I can find out exactly what happened?

If it was a uterus and/or blood clotting issue what can be done?

Hello, this is me! I’ve had two births similar to you. Now having a third and they’ve said they’ll put IV access as soon as I get to hospital and have the IV drip to contact uterus ready just in case. Second was an accidental home birth so didn’t get the injection and I wonder if that contributed, but I think in a lot of cases you just don’t know.

I had haemorrhage after my second and they thought it was down to placenta being so large (he was 10lb12)
It was panic stations to start then they put me on an oxytocin drip to contract things. I had had the injection to expel the placenta etc.
I enquired when preg with no.3 if I would be denied a water birth due to the haemorrhage the second time and a hospital midwife just advised me to not mention it as it had somehow not made it to my record anyway (?!!) and the chances of it happening again were like a million to one as there was no real cause or issue with me.
I did not haemorrhage the third or fourth time.
