I took 400 in my pregnacare.
Someone told me you should take folic on top of pre natal.
Then I'm thinking back to when I had my booking appointment and I remember nurse saying have you taken folic acid , have you taken vitamin d then asked are you taking a pre natal.now I'm wondering if I've taken enough folic. I'm already in second trimester 14 weeks and stressing myself out about spina bifida

One of the two is fine, don't worry. I only take folic acid and vit D, eat a healthy and varied diet, no special expensive prenatals, and have been told that's fine.

Hi OP, you just need to take 400 unit folic acid and 10units of vitamin D (unless otherwise indicated) it doesn't matter whether they come as part of a pregnancy multi vit or not.

The midwives are keen to know that you're taking the folic acid and vitamin D because there's a strong clinical reason for doing so. In my experience however (...which is where the confusion might have come in for you) they also encourage you to/assume you're taking pregnacare (I wonder if this is because they closely monitor iron levels in pregnancy which is included in most pregnancy supplements...?).

(I only ever took vitamin D and folic acid separately).

@AnonymousXXIX first trimester my diet was completely rubbish to be honest as I couldn't stomach most foods and only think I could was unhealthy beige foods so I highly doubt I wss getting much nutrition through diet other than my pre natal
I just felt confused thinking about it now and then wondered if I haven't been taking enough folic

Some people don't take prenatal vitamins but are advised to still take the standard doses of folic acid and vitamin D. If you're taking pregnacare or something similar these will already have the right amount of folic acid and vitamin D in them so don't stress about it. They will also tell you to eat a balanced diet to further support getting the right nutrients, but again don't stress about it too much if you've struggled with sickness, etc in the first trimester.

if you choose to take separate standard dose folic acid and vit D tablets on top of pregnacare I don't think this would matter in all honesty, you'd just be getting a bit more than the 'standard'.

Some women (myself included) get advised to take higher doses of folic acid (5mg) and vit D (20 micrograms) - I also take these as separate tablets on top of pregnacare, but this was on the advise of a consultant based upon my BMI being slightly too high and I also suffer with anaemia. Unless you are told otherwise by your midwife or for any reason have a consultant appt who then advises this for you, what you're doing currently is spot on x

People who are obese have to take more folic acid so if someone you know is doubling up that may be why

ChildOfTheMoon · 22/01/2024 13:08

@Burpcloth ah thankyou, yes maybe I did get confused as I started thinking maybe she meant I should be taking both pre natal and folic

I took 5mg folic acid while ttc and when I got pregnant switched to a prenatal that had 400mcg of folic acid in it
