Can I request scan from midwife

I've had lots of cramping and back pain all week.
I wanted to know can I just request a scan?
When I had my last early miscarriage epu wouldn't see me unless I was having bleeding.
I'm rather stressed and anxious and wondering can I not request my midwife offers me a scan to check everything is OK ot will they just give me same advice ? My baby was also several days behind at last scan and dr kept giving me different measurements and I've found that concerning which was correct. She just took the biggest . I'd rather just have a rescan as part of me worries maybe the slower growth and now I'm having stomach pain is related.
Don't know whether to try contacting them or not

How many weeks pregnant are you? basically if you're worried, go in for an assessment - you're after the opinion of the professional, if they say you don't need a scan, ask why and have a conversation about it.

blackpanth · 19/01/2024 16:32

I think you'll have to get a private scan. X

At 14+4 I’d just go into triage and explain what’s happen and your past history…

CCLCECSC · 19/01/2024 17:11

I'd phone your midwifery team and ask for advice, explaining history and concerns.

Hi
midwives don’t do scans, they’re not trained to do so but they can do a Doppler. If you call antenatal assessment at your assigned hospital and explain the situation they will decide whether to scan you. They scanned me at 20 weeks when I had reduced movement and cramping but on another occasion they didn’t. They don’t just scan everyone that requests it as the NHS wouldn’t be able to meet this demand so they make a judgment call.

Ttcmumma · 19/01/2024 18:55

You're better off booking a private scan. I had mild bleeding around 13+3 and epu just said 'call back if it gets worse' I was panicking. Booked a private scan for the next morning and they were lovely, checked everything for me and put my mind at ease x

Ttcmumma · 19/01/2024 18:56

To add, I had a mmc at 14 weeks prior to this pregnancy but that didn't seem to bother them x

SuperDopper · 19/01/2024 19:03

It’s unlikely. Even without your history, women are anxious throughout the pregnancy and so understandably women in your shoes would be even more so. And because of that, they don’t offer scans unless there is an actual need for one.

Can you afford a private one? I got one every few weeks until I could start to feel baby moving.

Allthatglittersisntart · 19/01/2024 19:35

You do get extra (optional) scans when you go for reduced movements after 28weeks but that may not help you.
Why not ask and see then book private if they refuse?

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 20/01/2024 10:09

I think you’re very unlikely to be offered a scan on the NHS with the current symptoms you have (although I totally understand your concerns and sympathise). So another vote for private scan - I’m in the south east and they start at around £60 here for a 15 minute “reassurance” scan. It’s not nothing I know but worth it for peace of mind if you can possibly afford it. There are multiple places in my area that offer it (companies like “Hey Baby”) and you can usually get an appointment really quickly. Good luck.

florasmama · 20/01/2024 18:12

Hi, another vote here for the private scan route. Same reasons as PPs. Don't know whereabouts in the country you are but I'm based in the Midlands and used Peek-a-Baby during my pregnancy, they were really good. I think there's one in London as well. Definitely worth it for peace of mind. Hope you're feeling better x

MoonstoneAndRoseQuartz · 21/01/2024 01:09

Ah unfortunately I didn't think they would offer a scan. Its so concerning and fustrating not to offer any reassurance. My cramps have been going on for days and are severe. I was told they shouldn't be worse than period pain that'd what concerning me.
I'll just have to wait it out until next month. They lost my referral and i had to keep chasing them so I didn't get my booking appointment until 12 weeks so we actually booked a private scan earlier this month because they just weren't giving us a date for our booking and we had to sit and wait for them to squeeze me in. Cost us 85 in our area. I'm not in England. Unfortunately we can't afford another 85 this month again.

I would go to your early pregnancy unit abd tell them whatever is necessary to get that scan. It’s your baby and this the only way you can protect them now. If cramping really hurts they do normally see you.

I second this, having read your most recent post please don't take no for an answer. Thinking of you OP 💐

A scan doesn't protect a baby, though.

EPU may well see you if you're cramping, but they wouldn't scan in most hospitals. I looked this up when I had cramping at 13 weeks, and Mumsnet said I was being weak by not demanding a scan and staying there until they did it. They wouldn't. Eventually a lovely midwife explained that scans don't change outcomes and they won't scan at that point. They did HCG blood tests, but that doesn't offer immediate reassurance. She advised a private scan, but said they can feed into anxiety for more scans.

You do get extra (optional) scans when you go for reduced movements after 28weeks but that may not help you.

This is also hospital dependant - mine only offer a scan for reduced movements after three incidents, they usually offer monitoring, but only above 22 weeks. If you do have three incidents, you can have the scan, but then can't use the birthing unit or have an unmonitored birth; you have to be connected to the machines on labour ward. A friend of mine suffered badly with anxiety during her pregnancy and so went in whenever she was worried about not feeling baby as much, and she was really surprised when the time came and she was so limited in options, because medically everything was fine. Again we looked into it, and it's a common policy.

OP I do feel for you. I had bad cramping around 13 weeks, and then a day of bleeding, which was really difficult. I was a wreck until my next scan, I couldn't concentrate on anything. Everything was okay, though, and he's two now! I hope everything is okay for you, too.
