Hi all,

so I got my BFP last week and since I have self referred to midwife and bought folic acid supplements..

this is my first child and honestly I’m kinda just clueless if there’s stuff I should be doing now or nothing I shouldn’t be doing that’s no the obvious ones 🤔

I have booked a private scan on Valentine’s Day at about 8 weeks by then for some reassurance but I just don’t feel pregnant and don’t feel like I know what to do next 🤣

thanks for any guidance lovelies xxx

Folic acid and vitamin D. NHS website has a list of foods to avoid (stick to that and stay off google) that’s it. You’ll have booking appointment between 8-10 weeks and your scan between 11-14 weeks. it’s all a bit anticlimactic.

Congratulations

i know what you mean by anticlimactic to be honest looking into it I didn’t realise how little you really see midwife etc if there’s no issues 🤣
finding out 5 days before AF was due is gonna be my biggest regret because this week has already been long as hell! Glad I’ve got a private scan to look forward to 12 weeks seems to long away.

Hi,

Congratulations! Defo doing the right thing with taking folic acid and referring to the midwife. I’d defo try and eat as healthily as you can. Defo research foods you should not eat during pregnancy. Reduce caffeine or avoid altogether if you can. I was quite oblivious to some of them. Don’t have baths that are too hot either or get in hot tubs (again this was new to me until I was pregnant). Also remember my midwife saying to avoid sleeping on your back and sleep on your side (again research). Stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. Take care with no heavy lifting etc and get as much rest as you can. Hope this is somewhat helpful! Wishing you all the best x x

It is so underwhelming isn’t it!!
Absolutely no one medical is interested until after that magic 12 week mark.

You can of course do what you are doing because it’s perfect and bask on your lovely exciting news!

Congratulations. 🌺😊

@raevans not sleeping on your back is only in third trimester due to weight of the baby on a main artery. Caffeine is fine up to 200mg a day (around 2 cups of coffee) and it’s really beneficial to stay active during pregnancy.

It is a very LONG few weeks unfortunately Grin Congratulations!

It's probably a bit out of date now but I really really loved Kaz Cooke's The Rough Guide to Pregnancy - I really liked the week by week diary for every week of pregnancy. Much more relateable than the smug, dull Emma's Diary (do they still give that out?)

Also there are any number of pregnancy apps which will let you compare the baby's size to various items, which are always fun. Just beware of signing up to too many of them (or create a throwaway email account for pregnancy related stuff) because unfortunately if the worst happens it can be a pain to get unsubscribed from the emails and marketing.

Go and find your MN bump thread - it's always lovely to have people to discuss every miniscule tweak and symptom with who won't get fed up because they are equally early-pregnancy-obsessed. You'll find it here:

Also I agree just to look at NHS pages and strictly ignore absolutely everything else when it comes to recommendations - there is a lot of pseudoscience on the internet about pregnancy and you'll also come across a lot of information from other countries which might not be relevant in the UK.

Please stay off google, you'll end up scaring yourself.

I know i did, id bend down in my job and be scared of the worst because google told me that i shouldnt be bending down in early pregnancy even though my job was working with babies, i had to lift them and pick them up and some of them werent very light, especially the foody babies (those little chubby babies that eat and eat and eat) but id always scare myself to the point where i was having breakdowns atleast 3 times a week over whether im going to hurt my baby.

Just enjoy the no bump for the first couple of weeks, my friends who have gone full term have said being pregnant in heat is horrible, having the bump is uncomfortable, and eating just becomes a pain depending on your cravings or whatever the midwife says you need more of. One of the girls who i used to work with had to eat apricots all the time to get a certain vitmain, she got sick of eating them by the time she went on maternity!

If you have any questions you should always speak to your midwife. During my first pregnancy i read on google that i couldnt eat mayo and started craving it😂 so i ended up asking my midwife if i could eat mayo and she actually said i could! As long as it was pasterised.
Always listen to your midwife, ring her if you have any burning questions about what you can and cant do!

Enjoy your pregnancy and congratulations momma!
