Hi all,

Due to a number of losses I get ultrasounds every fortnight. My full pregnancy baby has been bang on 50th centile. I am now 33 weeks exactly and baby has jumped up to off the chart and is coming in at 6lb ! She was 3lb 5oz 2 weeks ago at my last scan. The sonographer sent me to daycare to have blood tests done and for a doctor to speak to me. The doctor said she has never seen a jump this big in her career and that she would be surprised if the measurements were correct but that my scans were very clear and measurements were very clear. I’m back on Monday to be tested for gestational diabetes.

looking to see if anyone has had any similar experiences?

💗💗

I had a similar one. My ds was predicted to be 11lbs or something bonkers! It was completely incorrect and he was born at 7lb2oz. 😁

I don’t know if your bump measurements have aligned with the jump, but a big thing for me was my bump measured small, so I think that pointed to the inaccuracy of the scans in my case. They kept saying I wouldn’t be able to have a natural birth, but in reality, it was so quick no one made it bar a couple of paramedics right at the end.

Hi, congratulations on your pregnancy!

It's hard to say if the readings on your baby's size/weight are accurate - your baby very well might be quite big or had a sudden growth spurt.

However, often these measurements are inaccurate. For example, my medical team told me my baby had barely put on any weight for 2 weeks (third trimester, which worried me) and that turned out to be wrong. Then later when she was due, they thought my baby was 400g more than what she actually was at birth.

Also, I know someone who's baby was predicted to be 3.5kg before birth, but when she was born she was actually just 2.5kg!

So it's probably worth taking these measurements with a pinch of salt but it's always interesting to hear how much they weigh as you go along.

@ChaosAndCrumbs thank you so much for your reply 💗 so because I get ultrasounds every 2 weeks they have never measured my bump. I’ve got a little boy and my bump was so much bigger with him than with this little one. The doctor said today there would be no way I could give birth vaginally. Your response has made me feel better 🥰🥰 xxx

My SIL was booked in for a section at 39 weeks because they said my nephew was huge and would be too big for her to deliver naturally. He was 8lb 2oz. They had made out that we was going to be 10/11lbs.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 17/01/2024 14:41

I had an unexpectedly large baby at 9lb 11
I’m only 5 foot 2 and at the time was around 8.5 stone…
no one picked this up when measuring the bump. To be fair I only has a 12 week scan that was the norm in my area 20 years ago…
2nd baby similar ‘normal’ bump size but baby well over 8lb
both vaginal birth I’ve got wide hips!
I’m sure they will keep a close eye at next scans.

I was tested for gestational diabetes and was borderline however I had horrendous pregnancy sickness so one theory is that baby got a lot of sugar/stodge due to my very high carb diet when I could actually eat.

Try not to panic. Mumsnet is FULL of anecdotes about growth scans being wrong.

My 50th centile baby turned out to be 25th. My second, also 50th centile, baby turned out to be 91st! Her birth was actually easier and I had her at home in the pool so I've if yours is 'big' it's just the size they are meant to be.

If they had got DD2s measurements right I'd have been sent for tests, recommended induction, labour ward etc all interventions which wouldn't have been necessary.

annlee3817 · 17/01/2024 23:04

I had regular scans with DD2 and was told I would be having a 9lber plus at 39 weeks, she was born at 39+5 weighing 7lbs 10, I did have a lot of fluid though, Scans with DD1 however got her weight absolutely spot on.

@Sineadb88 Really hope gestational diabetes test comes back negative and you and glad you feel a bit more reassured 😊 I think growth scans are more like a pointer for the consultant to investigate further rather than a highly accurate tool. I’d ask if they could measure your bump to give an indication that way too. I had scans every 4w (so slightly less), but was still measured routinely and I think that helped the doctor know the route forward as well. Hope everything goes as smoothly as possible for you and your LO. xxx
