Low lying placenta. Mixed views. Confused.

Hey :)

I attended my 20 week scan last Monday and everything was good. The sonographer was unable to get photos of the heart because the baby was being a rascal. But she was very thorough and tried lots of different positions and had me off the bed jumping up and down etc. however we still couldn't get the images. But there were no concerns with anything else.

Today I was back for a follow up scan and I had a different sonographer who captured the images of the heart and all was fine. Just before we finished she scanned over the placenta and she thinks but wasn't completely sure that it might be low lying. She wasn't completely sure as she said it might just be the angle she could see and didn't want to say for sure as it hadn't been flagged previously. I was hoping to leave today buzzing everything was fine but now I'm worried about this. I'm worried incase I get bleeding etc. can anyone give me some reassurance.

I'm booked in for another scan at 32weeks to see for sure what is goin on and I'm going to book for a private scan maybe at 28 weeks to see also and see if it's moved. Keep everything crossed for me 🤞

Thanks in advance ❤️

I had the exact same thing. Marked as low lying in a follow up scan. It moved. Vaginal delivery.

@PurBal thank you for your message. I'm just a bit confused like is it low or not lol. I also had a private scan at 19 weeks and there was no concern about the placenta then. Keeping everything crossed it does move. Xx

Mine was the same at 20 week but not so low lying I had to do anything differently. At 30 week sonographer happy it has moved enough but if it hadn’t they’d have also booked in a scan at 36wk. Midwife said the majority of time they move.

@jjolies1 yeah I'm the same they havent said to avoid anything or do anything differently so I'm definitely takin that as a positive x

Both of mine were low lying. With my first I had multiple bleeds, hospitlised 9 times and still delivered vaginally, all be it 5 week early. My second was low lying, but no bleeding and a vaginal delivery at term. I was specifically told not to have sex and take things easy with the first, nothing was mentioned with my second.

Same happened to me at 20 weeks low lying within 2mm of cervix - booked in for another scan at 32 weeks. Booked a private scan with window to the womb at 27 weeks - wouldn’t commit and tell us where placenta was (other than it was posterior) so be careful when booking make sure itll be worth paying for an extra scan as they may not give you the reassurance you need.

I rtd at 32 wks scan and was told placenta had moved right up out of the way 9/10 they move xx

A huge number of placentas will be classed as low lying at your 20 week scan. If you imagine, your uterus is still very small at 20 weeks, as in still below your belly button. Compared to the size of the placenta. It doesn't have a huge amount of space to be considered 'upper' so many will appear low early on. It's just a variation of normal.
By 32-34 weeks, the uterus has stretched and grown so much that the placenta stretches up with it. That's the best time to assess as it should have moved by then. No need to take any special precautions for now but same advice for everyone - bleeding or pain attend your hospital.
Please try not to worry as it is just a variation😊

Mine moved and I had a full term vaginal delivery at home. Try not to worry, most move.

Thank you so much girls. Just mixed messages got me feeling a bit deflated but these messages have definitely made me feel a bit more positive about the situation ❤️

Its fairly common and in most cases has moved by 32 weeks, as long as your booked in for the follow up scan then not a major worry. If need any internals or get any bleeding etc before then just mention was ? Low lying
