6 weeks pregnant, terrible nausea, freezing cold all the time and sleeping 14 hours plus out of 24. Is this normal or could I be deficient in something?

Hi, just over 6 weeks pregnant on my second. I had hyperemesis last time but it started a bot later maybe around 7 weeks. This time I have had awful nausea for the past 2 weeks, I cannot seem to get warm and I am sleeping 12 hours at night and napping in the day. Going to the doctor on Thursday. Should I ask to be checked for anything specific or just see what he has to say? I have a dd who is nearly 2 - I can't go on like this for her sake. I am miserable every minute of the day.

Congrats on your pregnancy. Sorry to hear you are having a tough time though. Severe tiredness does hit some people but it could also mean you are deficient in something.

I would recommend Optimum Nutrition Before, During and After Pregnancy by Patrick Holford and Susannah Lawson if you are interested in nutrition. I certainly think what you eat has a LOT to do with how you cope with pregnancy - it didn't stop me feeling wretched for the first trimester but I have had no other problems since, no constipation, heartburn, varicose veins, stretchmarks etc (and I am 30 wks PG with twins).

Good luck!

minouminou · 18/03/2008 16:30

just wondering, suiledonn...could it be twins?
just thinking that as you're much sicker this time, and, as you're growing 2 placentas/cords/etc etc
maybe raise this with your GP and see if you can get an early scan
i remember being cold a lot, though, when i was in the 1st trimester...only 1 DS!
hope you feel better soon

expatinscotland · 18/03/2008 16:33

I've had this with both girls.

I am pregnant again and have similar problems.

I have a 4-year-old and 2-year-old to look after, and I'm 37. I think it's due to my age.

TooPanickyToThinkOfNewName · 18/03/2008 16:36

I feel like this too. Not sure how pg I am, but know I'm below 12 weeks (apparently). Im exhausted, can't get warm and feel sick all day!

Didn't feel like this with either of my other two

Rosa · 18/03/2008 16:41

Have to join this thread. Am pg with No2 am about 6/7 weeks have dd 2yrs and I feel like Sh*t. I am the older brigade but Nausea kicks in from the moment I am vertical and stays. Am tired but can't relax / nap as nausea kicks in.
Have bought ginger root to try and add in boiling water but think smell will make me vomit.
Was working FT when pg with No1 and had none of this !!

jackamolsmum · 18/03/2008 18:01

Snap! I'm 8 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child and have the same thing- bedtime is now 8pm and I sleep when my 17 mth old has his nap! Am wearing 2 jumpers today and feel terrible with the nausea-not actually being sick but had horrific morning dry retching and spitting (i know-totally gross!)

I didn't have any of this with my DSs pregnancy- I wonder if it means we're having a girl?!

belgo · 18/03/2008 18:06

I'm 11 weeks pregnant and still spending 12 hours in bed at night, and turning up the heating high every day. I've got near constant nuasea but not once thrown up - which is incredible compared to my first pregnancy when I threw up 2 or 3 times a day from week 5 until week 26.

Are you taken pregnancy vitamins suiledonn? Apart from that, it's probably normal what you are experiencing, although it is worth asking for a blood test maybe?

Anyway, many sympathies, hope you get through the next few weeks!

friendlyedjit · 18/03/2008 18:08

have had this throughout first three pregnancies and still chundering almost daily at 36 weeks. Three girls already, presume this may be another?!
It's horrible...... did any antisickness pills work last time?

Thanks for all the replies. It is something of a comfort to know I'm not the only one.
I had such a horrible time last pregnancy that I was being really positive that this time would be different but so far the only difference is constant nausea rather than constant throwing up.

neenz I actually own a copy of that book from last time round but I gave it to my sis who is ttc. I might ask for it back and see if it helps.

Has anyone tried Vitamin B6? I have heard mixed reports on it but it does seem to work for some women.

friendlyedjit I took Stemitil last time round but it didn't help. Only think that help me last time was 3 days of intravenous fluids but not throwing up so no worries about dehydration this time.

Hi congratulations on your pregnancy.

I'm nearly 16 weeks and this morning DH had a shirt ironed for him for the first time since before Xmas! Have been too sick and exhausted up until now to get anything done. I was also really sick in my last pregnancy and had to take metoclopramide to get me through. Other than that wearing those sea sickness bands helped. DH has got so used to seeing me sitting on the sofa, looking very green and shivering in a duvet that he hasn't recognised me the past few days! I've also had to take DS1 (7 months) back to bed for a 2 hour nap every morning.....
I think you have to do whatever gets you through these weeks, wish there was a magical cure though....

MrsMattie · 19/03/2008 08:18

Worth getting checked out with your GP, but at about 7 weeks pregnant I had to take a fortnight off work I was so exhausted and nauseous. I slept all day - probably 14-16 hours a day. It passed by about 10 weeks and I had a straightforward pregnancy. It does hit some people like that!

Neenzandhertwinbeans · 19/03/2008 15:30

If it is twins you won't be cold for long - I am the coldest person ever usually but with this twin pregnancy I have been really warm.

hedgepig · 19/03/2008 21:59

glad to find this thread I'm 11 weeks and frozen too. I was expecting sickness and tiredness from my last pregnancy experience but not feeling cold. All the book I read say that the increased progesterone makes you feel hot.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
I understand truly what you are going thru. I have been using hot water bottles of a night. I am 14+ weeks pregnant and have had the worst ms ever. I have my first scan today .

ellideb · 20/03/2008 10:24

Just had a chuck up myself now, feeling lots better but missed the toilet and got the wall instead! TMI i know! was looking for this thread in desperation for anything that might stop me for being sick but too late! im 14 and a half weeks and still regularly throwing up. I do feel cold a lot of the time, during the day but feel quite warm at night. It is a bit confusing because all of the pregnancy boooks say how hot you should be feeling. I think its to do with the effect the hormones have on your thyroid and hypothalamus, not necessarily a problem. exhaustion is common in early pregnancy. I'm lucky to be able to take a nap mid afternoon as i work from home so really feel sorry for those of you who have to go to work!

ellideb · 20/03/2008 10:25

Congrats on your 1st scan mama!

suiledonn · 20/03/2008 10:47

Hi everyone, how are you all doing today? I have thrown up once or twice since I posted last and to be honest it gave me a short relief from the nausea. I was terrified of throwing up because when I started on last pregnancy I didn't stop for months but so far it hasn't developed into that.

leonied thanks for the tip about the thyroid. I will definitely ask the doctor about it.
