Coke Zero in pregnancy

Hi, I’m 5w4d pregnant, I do love to drink Coke Zero, before pregnancy I would drink probably 3 cans a day but I’ve read studies of kids having autism, early labour all linked to aspartame in Coke Zero. I also read that Acesulfame K which is in Robinsons juice is just as bad. I’ve limited myself to 1 Coke Zero a day and 1 robinsons cup a day but I want to reduce this more based on what I’ve read and then I’m drinking water which is usually ok but the taste is not right lately don’t ask why.

has anyone drank lots of diet soda when pregnant and been ok? Can you also recommend anything other than water (I don’t really like herbal teas only have mint occasionally when I have an upset tummy)

thank you!

Diet Coke linked to increased autism rates in boys

A new study has raised “new questions” about Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi and its potential impact on autism rates, particularly in newborn sons.

I really can’t remember, I’m sure I definitely had one maybe after 20th of November. I was with my current partner from say the 20th November all the way till now. Pregnancy test was positive on 23rd dec 1-2weeks clear blue. Had a scan on Friday 5th and they said 4 and a half to 5 and a half weeks.

1111hope · 10/01/2024 20:49

@Chhh im not too sure maybe best to ask the hospital when it is likely you conceived. The clear blue says 1-2 weeks when you are about 3-4 because the weeks are taken from the first day of your last period so I’d say you are more 5.5 weeks than 4.5 weeks which technically wouldn’t be from 16th November. I am 5.5 weeks but didn’t test positive till 29th December and my last period was 2nd December so I think you are safe you would probably be a lot further on if you conceived on 16th November (I think!)

@Chhh it sounds like you conceived in the middle of December. Around the 10th.

Chhh · 10/01/2024 20:52

Thank you so much , so would you reckon it would be current partner or 16th November?

Mazuslongtoenail · 10/01/2024 20:54

Very cold come zero was my craving when pregnant - it’s what made me take a test with my second. Both of mine needed inducing and were certainly not delivered early.

Not statistically significant as a sample of two obviously!

Current partner from what you've said.

You'd be nearer 8 - 9 weeks if it was from the sex you had in Nov.

Mazuslongtoenail · 10/01/2024 20:57

I thought I’d posted on the wrong thread then - mad dual topic going on 🤪

Chhh · 10/01/2024 20:58

Thank you so much

@1111hope i must admit I did drink a bit of Diet Coke and when we was out for meals and with friends I would drink it aswell no harm done to my twins and was clear of gd aswell when they did the test

allgoodthings84 · 10/01/2024 23:34

It’s not the best thing to drink but I drank one can of Diet Coke a day (sometimes 2) when pregnant with my 8 year old and she doesn’t have autism and didn’t get the memo about coming early. She was 8 days late.

my second was 5 days early (she’s nearly 5 months old now) and I didn’t drink fizzy as I had a massive aversion to it (I normally drink it every day) so for me drinking or not drinking Diet Coke/Coke Zero had no baring of babies arrivals

AndThatWasNY · 10/01/2024 23:43

Personally I went as healthy as I could during my pregnancies. No one really knows the causes of lots of issues but coke zero won't be healthy or beneficial for your baby. It might not be harmful but why not limit it just on case, it's not doing you any favours and can cause issues with blood sugar levels and lead to weight gain (ironically).

@ASGIRC

yes but the scientific advise regarding this is generalised so the rest of the message matters regardless wether it’s about caffeine or no.
the NHS advises 200 mg of Caffeine is allowed as well as about 4 units of herbal teas. (This is not limited to non caffeine teas because if you calculate the proximate amount of caffeine in caffeinated teas it also results to about 4 units (4 cups a day))
you have no idea how sensitive the OP is, just because you drank caffeinated cola and you were fine it does not make it an absolute metric.
Some people simply can be that small percentage that end up being sensitive. You do not know if someone else can be sensitive to it, or any other tea or drink that has something in it that poses a risk even a small one.
Just because you do not understand my comment does not mean it’s less scientific, irrelevant or factless.

I had a can or two a day with both mine. Not always Coke Zero/Pepsi Max though. Sometimes had Tesco's Cloudy lemonade, or other sugar free lemonade. Both had to come early, but unless pre-eclampsia is caused by small amounts of fizzy drinks, and not the other risk factors I had I think it's ok. No sign of autism in my two (4 and nearly 2)

I had no problem with water, but diluting down fruit juice with sparkling water sounds nice. I like diluted fruit juice with tap water or lemonade anyway.

Pumpkinpie0201 · 11/01/2024 09:26

Definitely a no for me.
Your baby will be fine even if you drink one or two can daily, but I don`t like the idea to put those chemicals into my body.
If you drink full fat, the huge amount of sugar is extremely unhealthy, and if you drink zero, the sweeteners are just as bad.

When I crave something fizzy, I add soda water for a fresh orange juice. Takes the craving away while is definitely a much healthier option.

Hellnope · 11/01/2024 09:29

I had hyperemesis gravidarum and all I could drink was Pepsi max. No water and no food. I have a healthy 3 yr old now
